RobinM
I'm about to pack my things and leave. For good. I can't do this anymore. I know I won't. But that is how I feel. Beau. He stopped eating. His weight was up on Friday and as of Friday, he was not eating with much gusto anymore. He is on 40mg of pred. 50 mg of imuran, prilosec and carafate. We thought that maybe he was traumatized about being brought to the vet for the weigh in since he reacted the same way the week before. It got worse Sat & Sunday. Today via email, my vet shared her concern. He also had explosive "D" this morning with a yelp. Obviously still inflammed even with all the meds. Vet wants me to up the pred to 30mg AM & 20 mg PM. I have phone consult with a board certified nutrionalist from UPenn tomorrow or Wed. that my vet had in mind but if he is not eating, he is not eating. Nutrionalist or no nutrionalist. I can not give him anything but the fish. So, I can offer him hot fish, cold fish, today's fish or yestedays fish. Not too many options and he's done with fish. DH and I have talked of nothing else but Beau and his eating for the last 2 months, literally. We have to be around every 2-3 hours to let him out and offer him food so we are prisioners as well. I have not been out of my house since Thursday. We are spending $125.00 a week in fish that we can not afford and throwing 1/2 of it out. I guess this should have been under soap box... We need prayers. This boy has got to start eating. He will fade away. We know he is capable of losing 8 pounds in a week. As of Friday he was up to 54.4 but has not been eating well since. I am so beyond frustrated. Batmom
Speak with the nutrition specialist about quitting the prilosec at least, and maybe the carafate too. You know we're rooting for him and you both, Robin. RobinM
What is your thoughts about the prilosec and carafate? Do you think there is a tie in? I thought maybe the imuran since we started that 1 week ago today but my vet said no way. it takes 3-4 weeks to start working. Batmom
It has been my observation -- nothing scientific -- that sometimes tummy meds make a dog feel not hungry. Might just be worth a try to scale those meds back and see if his appetite improves. If he's not eating, nothing to lose. greyhndz
Imuran is most definitely a possibility - not sure why your vet dismissed it. Lexi was on Imuran for 1 week when she developed drug-induced hepatitis; she stopped eating and was very ill, requiring IV hydration and a major change in strategy. It took her about 2 months to recover. Labwork (liver function tests) would indicate whether this is the case with Beau. Some dogs just cannot tolerate Imuran, but one of the other immunomodulators might work well for him. IMHO, I wouldn't stop Prilosec and carafate. And it did for 2 weeks. I just don't understand any of this. He may be in the middle of a flare up and he might be intolerant of the fish now. This is so horrible. I would have never believed it if someone tried to explain and I could never explain just how insane this all is. Imuran is most definitely a possibility - not sure why your vet dismissed it. Anne
Has he been on asulfidine (sulfisalazine)? A friends dog has IBD or Ulcerative colitis and without the asulfidine her dog has watery mucusy stools and can't eat and is in pain etc. and so forth. I have a DIL who has Chrones and she is on sulfisalizine and without it she can't function. So just a thought. Hope something works for your boy soon, will be thinking of you both. Guest zoolaine
no advice just hugs and prayers going your way. Sunny has Protein Losing Enteropathy and it has been frustrating trying to get his protein levels back into the normal level. He was very picky for awhile - not like him at all - but I switched to duck food which he seems to love. He about drove me crazy for the couple weeks when he would not eat. He refused to eat his food unless I hand fed him but would happily go and eat Zali's which of course he wasn't allowed to have. I can only imagine the craziness your going through. Are you only allowed to give him the Tilapia or could you try a different type of fish? I actually bought Sunny some Tilapia after reading you were feeding it to Beau but when I got it home I realized it was a whole freaking fish - going to try and cook it tonight. Guest SueG201
Robin, i tried to contact you once before about these pills I give my greyhound. I am trying to find the website for you. My friend took her IG to that famous Holistic vet in Westchester, the name escapes me at the moment, anyway it is a natural hydrocortosine gel pill that is a miracle drug, and does not cause the same damage as pred does. I give it to my greyhound because she has bad tummy problems from having giarrida real bad as a pup. I swear it is a miracle pill, and calms the stomach and makes them hungry at the same time If you want I could send you a few in the mail to see if they work, but I am trying to get the web site for you. Let me know, you can PM me if you like

RobinM
When I speak to the nutrionalist tomorrow or Wed., I will inquire. But as of now, I can not give him anything but fish which he won't eat. He is in the middle of a flare up OR the imuran is doing a number on him. We will have his labs tomorrow (DH is there now) so I will feel better knowing that all is OK.
