Guest EmilyAnne
For further updates and more detail, go here: http://thebarfblog-emily.blogspot.com/ Currently Henry has started his very hard panting again. The pattern is, hard panting first, then crying added in, then trembling all over in fear, then Grand-Mal. Let's hope he doesnt finish the usual pattern all the way up to Grand-Mal. Otherwise he's going back to the vet to stay for awhile. eta: Henry is on a higher dose of pheno to start with till it kicks in. 2 pills twice daily for 3 days Update to the above, Henry stopped panting totally. phew. Please let this cluster be over.

zimsmom
Can you give the rectal valium as soon as he starts the early signs to prevent the full grand mal seizure? Almost like trying to take meds early to prevent a migraine. Although I suppose the valium knocks him out. Good luck to you & your family. Guest greyt2love
Oh, Emily, I've been down this road with Caesar. It's so frightening. I know you try so hard for him and that medication was not where you wanted to go. It was the only way for Caesar. Right now, the important thing for Henry is to get the clustering stopped. Best of luck and prayers and hugs for you both !

Guest EmilyAnne
Update: Henry really seems to be doing better. After his first Grand-mal, which was EXTREMELY bad and I was unable to do ice pack trick for, he cried, panted, and shivered right up until the next Grand-Mal. I have NEVER seen this before. I assumed it was just extra bad post-ictal, (especially since ice-pack was unsuccesful) but now I am thinking it's because he likely sustained blunt force brain trauma during the first Grand-Mal because he was really hitting his head EXTREMELY hard on the wall/dresser/closet door. I really really tried to stop his head from hitting the wall/closet door/dresser but I seriously was unable to, and received a bruise on my inner left calf about 5 inches around, with a gazillion scratches in the proccess of trying. I'm gonna pad those walls in that corner he sleeps in. I am figuring on wrapping 3 feet tall plywood generously with batting, then covering with pleather, and screwing to the walls. The last seizure which was a little after 7 am, his head and upper body were caught under the bed. With great difficulty I was able to get him out. So I am also going to figure out something to keep him from getting caught under the bed again. Hopefully with meds, he'll never seize *that* severely again. But I'm not gonna count on it. Anyways, he has done NO more panting, shivering, or crying in the last few hours.

greysmom
Oh, dear! I'm so sorry - I know how scary seizures can be. Our Bridge girl Libby was a seizure dog and we managed her for quite some time before she started clustering and had to go on pheno. Hopefully this will control it for Henry as well as it did for Lib-ster. TheFullHouse
I truly hope that with the meds he will be seizure free like Saint. It took us about 3 months to get Saint to that point with blood draws every two weeks to check medication levels. It took us about 3 months to get Saint to that point with blood draws every two weeks to check medication levels. I really really hope so Judy. Though Henry is all loopy right now from all the meds plus the emergency dose of valium, he's looking a billion times better than before he was given all the meds. I am sure he'd be dead right now as we speak if it were not for drugs. Drugs have their place and thank goodness for them! I don't ever want Henry to suffer like that again. Whatever side effects are coming, they'll be a piece of cake compared to what we just went through, and I know the side effects will not stay strong, they will become mild eventually, especially after we have found the right dosage and he has been on that dose for awhile. I posted a short video of Henry's sweetness on my blog. http://thebarfblog-emily.blogspot.com/2008...ing-better.html Every day I can have with Henry is a gift. TheFullHouse
Well with the potassium bromide and the pheno Saint was a little loopy i.e. walking into walls and such for a couple of weeks. The only lasting side effect he has is rear end weak but as you've seen by my pictures and videos, it doesn't stop him from enjoying every minute of every day! If it relieves Henry from those awful seizures and he can truly start enjoying life it will be well worth it. Keep us informed on how he's doing and give him a big kiss from Saint and I! Guest EmilyAnne
Stupid seizure monster is determined to take my dog. Henry has started panting again, very hard. I'm going to walk him a few houses down the block, that always gets him to poup, then I'm giving him a rectal valium when we get home if he has not stopped panting. This is not your normal panting. This is HARD panting.
TheFullHouse
I'd get the valium in him ASAP. You may have to keep him on it a few days until the meds start to work. It's going to take about 4 weeks for the potassium bromide to reach maximum strength and a good 2 to 3 days for the pheno to kick in good. You may have to keep him drugged until then. Guest EmilyAnne
I did it. Rectal valium has been adminstered. I'm supposed to wait 30 minutes, if pre-seizure behavior does not stop, then I give one more dose.

I'm glad that it worked and I hope it continues to work and you find the right combination of medication to end this nightmare. I'm so sorry you and your sweet Henry are going through this.
