Guest BooMooandDoo
The vet just called. . . . she has a herniated disc between L7 and S1. she has a lot of movement between this junction when there should be none. there appears to be no injury, so he thinks its genetic. the problem will not fix itself, but can be managed with conservative therapy. if we do conservative therapy with NSAIDS, physical therapy, and acupuncture she could be leash walked and live fine. . .but no running. He wouldn't recommend steroids because of her age. she is an ideal candidate for surgery and should heal fast. if we do surgery, she could have a normal life as a greyhound. if we do surgery, she will be hospitalized for 5 days, crate restricted for 2 weeks, leash walks/breaks for 4 weeks, and should be fine to go full force at 12 weeks. we are going to schedule a sit down meeting without Mazie to chat with the Dr. about the details. We are about 80% sure we're going to go ahead with the surgery. He recommends that we do it sooner rather than later because she has been having incontinence problems associated with the nerve pressure, and he says the sooner we release the pressure, the more likely the nerve can heal. Guest BooMooandDoo
We just picked her up. . . and just let me say the anesthesia didn't do anything to deter her whining :rofl We looked at the MRI pictures and the X rays and there is a very obvious herniated disc. The only thing that concerns the vet is that her vertebrae at that junction is very loose and the L7 vertebrae is uniquely shaped. If we do surgery, they'll remove the bulging disc, remove a big portion of L7 and fuse L7 and S1 together. Apparently surgeries like this are routine. . . .so its just a matter of doing it and working through the recovery. Thanks for all the good thoughts. Mazie is glad to be home with her brothers and we're happy to have her back (whining and all)!
