Neeed Some Info Please, Ami Is Loosing All This Teeth Today

My Amadeus is 10 years old. He has gone to the dentist today (to the sum of $3000.00) to get all his teeth pulled. We have tried dillegently to brush his teeth and give him greenies and yearly dentals but we lost the battle. It is going to more like oral surgery than just pulling teeth. they are going to build up his lower jaw with a prothesis so that the bone loss will not be so bad. Poor thing his roots were showing and his breath horrible. Now for the question.

I feed him 3 cups of dry with a little wet. how do I adjust his kibble to canned (a whole can a day, 1 1/2 cans a day) and what type of treats can i get him.

He is going to be very sore for a while.

I am so sad, can you give me examples of how your doggies have done toothless.

Sheila

update update update!!!!

He is home, in a lot of pain. Need a little info on what the Dr. gave him to make sure it is safe to give.

Clavamox-- this is the antibiotic so I know that is ok.

Rimadyl-- this is an anti-inflamatory but I seem to remember some greys don't so well on this

Tramadol-for pain

and he has a pain patch that is fentanyl that is to stay on for 5 days. He had a rough ride home but is now resting. I am going to sleep beside him tonight just to be safe and he will go to work with my DH tomorrow.

Thank you for all your help. As usual my GT family always come through.

You don't have to switch to canned if you don't want to. You can pre-soak the kibble for each meal ahead of time so it's good & soft. The advantage of this is then you don't have the potential problems caused by changing diets while trying to recover from surgery.

What I did was at each mealtime, I'd prepare a spare bowl for the following meal by putting in the regular amount of kibble, and adding warm water and/or chicken broth until the kibble is covered. Then let it soak in the refrigerator for at least a few hours before feeding so it's nice and "gummable." Then right before feeding, I'd add a little more warm water and stir, just to take the chill out and make it a little soupy. :chow: My poor toothless Chancy got by this way for a good long time with no problem. She also enjoyed soft treats like bologna, hotdog bits, soft bread bits, cheese, things like that.

The first couple of days will be hard. He'll probably drool oozy blood for a day or two, and leave the water dish a festive red. If he's reticent about eating at first, you can try offering meat babyfood, just to get his appetite going.

Good luck. :goodluck

Hi - sorry to hear about what sounds to be a pretty big surgery.

Rather than changing his diet over to canned, could you not just soak the kibble in boiled water from the kettle? That's what we did for our angel Sally (who only had 2 teeth). You could still add a little canned if you wanted to :)

My new guy only has his 2 bottom canines left.

With his previous family he had yearly dentals and lost teeth each time.

When I got him he had another and lost 23.

What I do to soak his kibble. I have a gas stove/oven. I cover his kibble with water and put it in the oven. I don't turn it on, but with the pilot light it stays @ 70 degrees. I leave it in there for at least 20 minutes. Really warm water would do the same.

Our mostly toothless boy Orion still eats regular kibble in water. He never chewed it before he lost half his teeth so we don't have any concerns about his lack of chewing now :)

Using warm water and soaking the kibble 10 minutes before feeding will soften it right up. My folks do this for their senior shih-tzu.

That is so good to hear. I really hate it for him, but the dentist said that he will feel much better after all is said and done. What scared me was that the bacteria he had is the kind that can go to his heart an kill him. We had a little boy die of that here in MD a few months ago. I want to do everything i can to keep him around. He had such a bad life before coming to me.

Awww...sending prayers and gentle hugs to our little boy. Our Angel Truffles lost all of his teeth. Let me tell you...he went through a second puppyhood at age 13 and felt wonderful after his recovery time. Our vet had us start on can food initially and then he went back to his kibble soaked in warm water. He ate soft jerky for his cookies and he played with his toys once again. I will be thinking of you...and please keep us posted. When Ami comes home you will want to pad his bed with something as our babe drooled blood for about 48 hours. :grouphug

My Gee does not have any teeth and she does just fine. I soak her kibble in hot water until it is soft. I home cook a lot and also use some canned foods. Hope things go well for Ami.

My Diamond lost 23 teeth in one sitting. She's got a few left............not much. None of the big grinding teeth, one front tooth, the small side teeth and a couple of little ones way in the back.

After the initial dental I soaked her kibble. When she healed I just mixed her dry kibble with very moist canned food (Wysong). She scarfs that up easily. It's actually easier to eat this than the soupy kibble. Has a little substance to it.

Her cookies are all soaked to softness. If I found that I didn't have a softened cookie ready, PB sandwich cookies for people (I think it's Keebler) gets soggy within seconds under warm water. She loves them.

They do quite well with those nasty teeth pulled.

My sister's grey Sage did just fine after losing the last of her teeth. You will be surprised how well they do. She was like a new dog, she felt so much better, no more pain. I swear she was like a puppy again. BTW she continued to eat her favorite dry kibble just fine. Her favorite treat was always Pedigree Breath Busters, and she continued to eat those as well. The only thing was her tongue wouldn't always stay in her mouth, so often times she'd be walking around with ETS. Tis OK though, she managed to carry herself with grace and dignity anyways.

Good luck and try not to worry.

My Savannah had 24 teeth removed last Wednesday. She did have bloody drool Wednesday night but by Thursday morning, it was gone. The Vet said the combination of Tramadol and the Rimadyl is what helps. She's had rimadyl in the past when her hock was acting up and there have been no problems with it. She is also taking the antibiotic Clindamycin. The Vet had also given her a shot for pain relief before we picked her up so she was set for the 1st night... after that, I think she had two doses of the other pain relievers and showed no further signs of discomfort.

Like others have said, I've been giving her kibble soaked in warm chicken broth. Nutro takes a long time to get soft so it hasn't ever gotten to the mushy stage and she has done just fine.

I'm so glad he's home...poor guy. I'm no expert on meds that's for sure, but what you list is safe. I know some Greys have a stomach upset with Rimadyl but there are people here more versed on that issue. I don't know anything about the patch. I've used it for people(work with Hospice) but never on my dogs. I just hope he has a very comfortable night and over the next few days. I'll keep him in my prayers for sure!! And thank you for posting the update, I was keeping an eye out for it.*****there's a post here on the patch recall, be sure to read that********

Thank you all for your prayers. Ami is doing fine. His snout is swollen and the advise about the blood was right on. He has a pain patch and that has helped a lot. The Vet is a specialist (dentist) so they really did a good job.

If he starts bleeding from any of his holes, dampen a regular tea bag (black tea, like Lipton) with water and apply to the hole. The tea contains tannins that help the blood clot. Just FYI, in case you need it.
