  1. Nutritional yeast is available at health food stores. Sometimes pre-packaged, sometimes I just scoop from the bulk bin. Get it in the flake form.
  2. DH just called to tell me Gwain ate ...and that I've been spelling Gawain's name wrong.
  3. Thane was at the adoption kennel for week or so eating the mix fed there. No record of what he ate in his last home so no way to transition him. Don't know if it would have made that big a difference if I'd gotten some scoops of the kennel food mix. He'd had a bit of diarrhea which we attributed to diffierent food and the stress of leaving his home of 5 years. I do the feedings 99% of the time. Maybe he doesn't like how Dad cooks Yes, Diane I left them all behind! I have never had a vacation in my 18 years of working at the hospital and can't remember one at any other time before that. Darn those furkids for trying to make me feel guilty.
  4. Thane (now Sir Gwain our new boy who has yet to be officially introduced here) did not want to miss a meal since I brought him home Saturday night. Ate fine Sunday, Monday, Tuesday. This morning before I headed north for Dewey he didn't want to eat. On Monday I took him along to the vet when I took Pudge in for her yearly checkup. Vet did a brief check and he tested negative for worms. He's been showing no signs of stress. Gets along fine with the rest of the pack. I just phoned DH and he said Gwain turned his nose up at dinner - even a bit of wet food. He is drinking. Told DH to give him some bread if he'll take it. Also sent him out to do a poop check. He has had runny poop but I figured that might be expected with all the changes he's gone through recently. In the morning I drive the rest of the way to Dewey and of course I'm gonna worry. Hopefully he just misses me. Miss Pudge didn't eat for DH either but she'll do that when I'm gone. They are both acting peppy at least. Guess I'm feeling guilty for leaving the furkids behind.
  5. Goodbye Kenny. Know that you were loved.
  6. Many years ago our old dog got bit by a spider - I can't remember what kind but it was not a black widow. She was given benedryl.
  7. Gracie (85 y.o.) was diagnosed with bursitis in her shoulder. You can actually see the little flecks of calcium from the stress (like how a heel spur forms in humans) on her xrays. Her limp is intermittent and she gets Tramadol as needed (via a prescription at Target).
  8. Wally is much better today. Happy poop. Jerrybird, Wally's race name was Allen Hogg. His siblings all had Hogg as their last name. We have never changed the names of the dogs we adopted but we took one look at him and knew he was meant to be a Wally.
  9. My Wally says, "Flagyl is my friend." He's on it for a week too. How Arty feels better soon.
  10. He looks all greyhound to me and is nearly a twin to my Gracie. Very handsome!
  11. Vet feels the skin growth is OK but we're to keep an eye on it. While she is new to this office, Dr. Santamaria dealt with many greyhounds in the DC area. The spot was quite bloody when she prodded it with her finger - not quite a growth, not quite a scab. She was amused that I circled the area with a black felt tip marker but also appreciative since you can get cross-eyed looked at brindles. However, just before we went into the clinic Wally had to poop. It was slightly bloody and I took in a sample. Vet gave Wally some Forti Flora. He'd had a history of colitis before we adopted him last year at age 8. We no sooner get outside than Wally has bloody diarrhea. Wally was given Flagyl 500mg / every 12 hours /for one week. He had a little bit more bloody diarrhea when we got home. Other than skipping breakfast all week, he has been drinking fine and eating his dinner. He is zippy and happy. I must add that a box of Crispy Creme donuts goes a long way at my vet's office. I brought them a box last Monday morning. Usually I take donuts to Animal Control along with my contact info in case a greyhound gets turned in. AC wasn't open yet so vet office got those donuts instead. As a result I was not charged for Wally's office visit today nor on Monday afternoon when Miss Pudge le mutt had tapeworms. I was only charged for meds both times.

    Feather

Debbie (GT: arlosmom) and Roy Mayo of Wilmington NC let Feather go today. He was recently diagnosed with cancer of the liver, pancreas and intestines. Feather was adopted through Greyhound Friends of NC. He was a very sweet boy and will be dearly missed. This was written by Roy: Feather 7/2/1999 – 9/24/2008 Today our big ol’ beautiful Feather succumbed to cancer and slipped away to join his adoptive sisters, Bailey and Heidi, at the Rainbow Bridge. There they blissfully wait for Arlo, Jewel, Debbie and me. Feather was born July 2nd, 1999, Feather Finn, pup of Grey’s Hot Holly and Memory Calling. His racing days were spent at Lakes Region Greyhound Park in Belmont, New Hampshire. He was retired at three years of age with 105 races. After coming to GFNC, Feather was initially adopted by Claire Lane, but his “love” for her cat Chionni led to his return. He was then fortunate to have been Alice and Ray Bossert’s first foster. Debbie and I adopted him on December 23rd, 2002. (Merry Christmas to us!) The initial transition was tough, Feather had digestive issues, but we weathered the storm, and have always been glad we did. Feather had a regal air about him. He seldom walked, he more or less pranced. He held his head high, walking, sitting, even lying down. He thought he owned the universe. His adoptive sister Bailey taught him different though, peeing on his bed and in front of his crate every chance she got. Though a sixteen year old half blind schnauzer, she was queen and never let Feather forget whose house it was! Still, every time they went outside, Feather let Bailey follow his big black form around the yard, so she wouldn’t get lost. Feather played hard. He roared around the yard, running and throwing his purple ball, or fleece toy, then pouncing, shaking, and throwing it again, spinning in circles. He was far from undisciplined though. He had his Canine Good Citizens award, and knew how to behave, quite the “gentleman”. Feather represented retired racing greyhounds well. He was in the 2007 Celebrate Greyhounds Calendar. He loved parades of all kinds, and attended most all of them, Christmas, St. Patrick’s Day, Kure Beach. He even got it together and had a good time at the Mayfaire Boat Show Parade last Saturday. He went to meet and greets, playdays, picnics at Halyburton, and anywhere else greyhounds were going to gather. He loved to lure course. He adored children, and seemed to enjoy having little ones draped around his neck. Most of all, Feather loved to walk on the beach at Ft. Fisher. He would go a ways, get a little warm, and head into the water’s edge to cool off. He would go out into about 6 to 12 inches of water, lie down, and let the waves roll over him as he held his head above the incoming foam. He was magnificent. Arlo, Jewel, Debbie and I will miss him in more ways than we know. Feather's calendar picture:
  13. Wally had a skin growth pop up - dark, ugly, uneven borders, on the side of his rib cage. I've seen other benign bumps on my dogs before but this looks different. Vet had a cancellation so we're leaving a few minutes. I would like to believe the premise that the more I worry about things, the more often they turn out to be nothing.
  14. The panting might be from pain and/or the stress of wearing the collar. Was he given any pain meds?

    Tootsie

May the sun shine bright, may no hurricane winds blow. Goodbye sweet Tootsie.
  16. Just went through this today with Miss Pudge le mutt. She has tapeworms and she has always been on Sentinel. Sentinel doesn't kill fleas (that's where the tapeworms come from) it just stops fleas from making more fleas. Anyway, the vet gave me one Iverhart pill to kill the tapeworms ($6) instead of the much more expensive Drontal ($40).
  17. Glad to hear that update. Whew. You can relax now, Stephanie, and have a happy anniversary.
  18. Lori, there's Dr Brad Kerr in Castle Hayne but he is extremely expensive.
