  1. According to our vet, the distemper vaccine is now every 3 years. If we were going to stagger vaccines, she recommends them to be 2 weeks apart. However, for her, the second vaccine could just be a scheduled pop in the office and a tech would administer the injection. Typically, I have always spaced out vaccines, but due to some other issues, I actually gave mine their distemper and Lyme vaccines at the same time. However, they received their vaccines at the same time in their previous homes (or at the track prior to be adopted out) and did not have a reaction, so I felt more comfortable with it.
  2. It is very common. But, I would post this in health and medical to reach a broader audience for this type of question.
  3. Oh, I am so sorry to see that Allie has left us. I loved hearing about her and seeing her photos. What a bright-eyed, feisty old lady!
  4. I learned the hard way - I now always muzzle when we leave. It is a very expensive mistake - financially and emotionally - and if my experience helps someone else, then yay! This is my version of paying forward, lol. Mine lived together for almost a year before something went awry. Thankfully, I happened to be there or I truly believe I would have lost one. Congrats on your new addition!
  5. I am so sorry, but what a great life the two of you had! Packed a lot into a short time. Love the seniors!
  6. I am so very sorry. We were all hoping for better results.
  7. My heart is breaking with and for you. Jan, I am so very sorry that Bosco needed Bruno more and now they are together once again, smiling down on you and the campers. Hugs Cindy
  8. I wrap Paris' meds in a piece of satin ball. Works like a charm here! Maggie, on the other paw, refused anything that may have *ever* contained a pill and we finally had to do the old open and shove method. With 20 some pills a day, I felt really really bad about that. But, she would get her most favorite treat ever after pilling (and only after pilling), so she would happily trot to her favorite pill bed twice a day when it was time. Keep on popping those pills, Bruno!
  9. Rachael, I am so very sorry to hear this. Joe was such a special soul. Hugs, Cindy
  10. What a cutie! We do, of course, need to see pictures of the tutu! I imagine the stink eye will be just as fabulous as the costume, lol. Welcome from PA!
  11. Over nuked hot dog bits were the go-to treat for my boys when training. Costco also sells these steak bite treats that the girls only get after pills, so they think those are the ultimate. They break into little smidges of treat, which is the way I like to treat them. Tiny bits but lots. Mine are about the number of treats, not the size! You could also try letting the cheese dry out - mine love cheese rinds, so that may work, too. Good luck!
  12. I am so very sorry. Your handsome sweetie knew he was home and felt secure enough to know that he could leave. Hugs to you. Cindy
  13. Thanks! Our vet will only prescribe Adequan. Thoughts on using equine v. canine? My understanding is that the only difference is shelf life and we would be going through a vial every two weeks at first, so that isn't an issue to me.
  14. Maggie is a 12.5 YO perma foster that we got in January. She has arthritis (especially in her hips) and two collapsed disks in her neck, as well as corns, anxiety and really bad cataracts reducing her vision to basically shadows. However, as cranky and stiff as she is, she is not ready to leave this earth and we want to do everything to keep her comfortable, but have to work within the constraints of her group. That being said, she is currently taking a slew of medications to manage everything - 300 mg gabapentin, 375 mg robaxin, 100 mg tramadol, and 25 mg trazadone twice per day. Since the trazadone seems to be helping with her anxiety, we are going to start her on Prozac but will keep her on trazadone until the initial loading period is done. She is a horrific pill taker and I have to shove them down her throat. That's a lot of pills. Our new vet (we just moved) isn't too familiar with Adequan. She recommends rimadyl. I have used Adequan on greys in the past and have had reasonable success. Would you start one over the other or in conjunction? Her bloodwork is still decent. All advice is welcome. We are just trying to keep our little old lady comfy - especially with colder weather coming on. Thanks! Cindy
  15. Maggie has a very difficult time seeing in the dark and gets very anxious. Our home has nightlights in the places that she frequents and life is much quieter now! Congrats on finding a solution!
  16. I am so very sorry. You were both blessed to have found each other. Hugs.
  17. I am so very sorry for your loss. I lost my whippet at 15.5 years - 4.5 years longer then they said I would have him. Broke my heart. Hugs to you.
  18. So, that explains all the thunder and lightening after midnight! There was quite the birthday celebration over the bridge last night.
  19. The seniors may not have the years left, but they certainly make the best use of the years that they have. I am on my third senior adoption, meaning at least 11 years old before entering my home. It hurts to lose them, but what I gained far outweighed the loss. Thank you for considering an oldie, but goodie!
  20. Fancy and I jog. I have jogged with 3 other greys and she enjoys it the most, by far. We have gone up to 5 miles, but that is rare. We usually run 3-4 miles three times per week. She has been on injured reserve for the past month and we just got back this morning. She did 1.5 miles and then took a one mile walk with the other two. It is our time and I defer to her on where we go and how far. By that, I mean, that is she isn't into that day, we just walk and/or cut it short. She will be 8 (!) in August and we started when she was 4. We go slow - about a 13 minute mile, which is fine. Our current course is hilly and runs through very rural area and our small town, so she gets mostly asphalt, which is more forgiving than concrete. She likes watching for deer and other assorted wildlife. She stops when she wants to and I don't make any demands. We did start slow and the 5 miles began when she was suddenly an only hound and this was her way of dealing with the loss. We run very early (5:30 am) and take shorter runs if it is too hot or humid. Forgot to add that I use a harness for running since her speed can vary and I don't want to stress her neck. We also both wear reflective and lighted gear. She will be wearing blaze orange in the fall, too.
  21. Those tricky ones burrow deep into your heart, don't they? Your tribute was as beautiful as your little girl. I am so very sorry for your loss. Wishing you peace. Cindy
  22. I spoke at length with the vet and they examined Paris. She had an anal gland issue and still exhibits some lameness due to a front leg injury that caused her to retire last July. They really believe that her behavior is the result of environmental issues and can be corrected. I appreciate the thoughts and suggestions about her being returned but I would rather work with her instead of dumping her. They will give me some names and suggestions when I go back to pick up Fancy this afternoon. Oh, and the vet commented on how beautiful their teeth were! He had never seen such nice teeth on a greyhound that hadn't been accomplished by a dental, lol. Nice to give some pats instead of just punches.
  23. Fancy is 7 and Paris is 4. Had Paris since September. Philly is hours away. We are near Emmitsburg, if that helps. Paris ihas been pretty submissive and Had always deferred to Fancy
