  1. My first two greyhounds slept in crates downstairs (our bedrooms were upstairs). They liked their crates and this worked well for us for 4 years. Then Lucky died and we moved, all in the same month, and after the move Silver wouldn't crate anymore so he slept in our bedroom in a dog bed. Ever since then, our greyhounds sleep in our bedroom on their own beds (new dogs are crated in the bedroom until we are okay with them staying out). None have ever gotten in our bed, except for Holly who would sneak in after we were asleep (because she was cold). All this to say, you have to do what works for you and the dog. Personally I'd recommend crating the dog in your bedroom - cats are safe, dog is safe but still gets to be near you.
  2. What a sweet boy. So sorry for your loss.
  3. Marlow does to my hubby when it's time for the evening walk and he's not getting out the door fast enough, lol.
  4. Just something I'll throw out there....First, I agree with what others have said about kids and dogs (my kids were little when we adopted our first hound and our first hound had some issues so I know what it's like trying to keep everyone safe). Secondly, is it possible your dog has issues (space, sleep aggression, ???) that may just now be coming out? Maybe in the past when Lizzie stepped on her she tolerated it but now she feels more comfy letting you know she doesn't want to be stepped on or she's scared of being stepped on. We have a new hound (Had him about 2 months) and he barked at my 18 year old for just sitting near his bed (I was in the room and witnessed it - my son did nothing, just sitting on the floor, near the bed, texting on his phone.) He has never done this before so I wonder if he just feels more comfortable now letting us know he does't want us that close when in his bed. Anyway, sounds like you have a nice dog and I commend you for trying to work this out but for the sake of hound and kids, don't get too comfy just yet.
  5. Any greyhound sitters in the Houston area?
  6. I'm so sorry for your loss. I unexpectedly lost my hound, Holly, last December (even the vet was shocked). I know how devastating it feels. Hang in there and sending hugs to you.
  7. Thanks for the info. The issues that may occur down the road is what my DH and I were concerned about but not sure if it was a real issue (my dogs growing up were always fed Purina and they lived long lives with few health issues). I'll checkout that site and will alos look at the food you mentioned from Costco. Thanks for the input.
  8. When we got Marlow, they told us he was eating Pedigree dog food so I bought small bag to start with, figuring I would have to change his food (I've always had to do a lot of work to find a food that worked for my new hounds). Well, his poops are good (better than any of our other hounds), he likes it and his weight is good. It's REALLYcheap (all my other hounds ate much more expensive food - this was due to trial and error in an effort to find ones that worked for the individaul dog). If this food works, should I be worried that it is a cheap grocery store brand?
  9. So sorry for your loss. What a sweet face.
  10. No advice but wanted to say she is a beautiful hound.
  11. Three weeks ago we adopted Dutch Marlow (affectionately known as "Marsh Marlow"). He's 4 1/2 years old and had been returned to the kennel due to a divorce. He is a sweet boy and has settled in very well. We feel very fortunate to have him. When I looked up his pedigree, I found that he and Silver were related, which I thought was very cool. Marlow's great, great grandfather was "Unruly" and that was Silver's great grandfather. Anyway I had planned to post a picture but can't seem to figure out how to do it in this forum.
