Jeff
Abby has a vet appt today for a split nail I've heard they can just pop off the nail with no anesthesia, is that true? Not sure what I'm in for this afternoon.
macoduck
Ouch. Sometimes it's like popping the tail off a shrimp and a little bit of soft tissue remains. I hope it's an easy repair for Abby. greysmom
I bet she's going to at least need a local for that. Ouch. KF_in_Georgia
Take her muzzle with you. If needed, it will be more comfortable than the vet's in-house muzzles. Jeff
I'm shocked, the recommendation was to leave it alone, and let the bottom fall off by itself. The top is still partially protecting the quick. I'm so shocked, I'm contemplating getting a second opinion.
greysmom
Given her lifestyle, I would think taking it off is the safer option. Definitely some protection is warranted, imo. You might duck tape it together (really, not sarcastically). A second opinion might be good too. racindog
Sounds to me like you have a knowledgeable & experienced vet! My first thought when I seen it was 'well if they leave it alone it will probably just fall off on its own and heal up." Been there done that. I am sure you won't have any trouble finding a vet that will be happy to "do" a bunch of feel good stuff, however to me it would seem a shame without at least giving it a chance to heal less traumatically on its own. It may take 3 weeks (or not) but if you just leave it alone it has been my experience that it will just fall off and heal up fine. I did keep Cash's foot bandaged to protect it and so she didn't get hurt by things touching it. In the beginning it is indeed very painful but that gets a lot better as long as you keep it protected and let it heal. Let us know how she goes
Jeff
Its been a couple weeks, here is where we are now. There was a lot of bleeding early on which subsided after a little more than a week. The lower half fell off the second week, and the top half sometime recently.

That's what I figured would happen. I don't know if a toenail will actually grow back, and if it does it may be a little narly hehe but there should be no pain or loss of function or any problems. My working dog has a toe like this and a nub of a nail is there and thats it. Absolutely no problem. Just one less toenail to cut
FiveRoooooers
Bea has a toe similar to Abby’s. No prob for her and the nail hasn’t grown back. Thanks for updating us! LaFlaca
Lola tore off one of her dewclaws. She has a similar stump. The nail never grew back.
