Trembling Legs, Struggling To Get Up And Down

Recommended Posts

Ruby has had weak legs on her hind end for a year or so, but the last few weeks we have noticed that she is trembling on all 4. Two days ago we took her on an RV trip, thinking she might enjoy the sunshine, and getting outside more often. Nope. She has been a huge anxiety ball who didn't eat or drink until tonight. She still gets up happily to go outside, but she won't lay down anywhere, so instead stands and shakes. It is so hard to watch. I can't find any tender spots along her spine, but she is struggling to get up and down. That part isn't new, but seems a bit worse. She is having trouble when squatting to pee too.

Is there anything that I can do to make life easier for her ? Does it sound like pain ? Anything else I should be looking for ? I have some Tramadol and am tempted to try some. In the past we have tried everything the vets can think of for her anxiety with no relief.

What do you think ?

Are you home now? Not eating and being so stressed likely exacerbated her hind end weakness. You can try the Tramadol, but if she's not in pain it probably won't make any difference.

She needs to get back to her regular routine.

Tramadol can go either way. When I started Rocket on it, I was giving it to him late in the evening, figuring he would sleep better. It actually made him antsy during the night and he would be up at all hours pacing and trying to get me to be up with him. I started giving it to him with his 5PM dinner and that issue went away. It will help with pain, but not every dog respond the same to it. You might try giving it in the morning to see how she gets through the day.

Hope it helps.

Karen, I'm so sorry to hear your Ruby is not well. Tramadol did nothing for Wendy in her final days except make her seem depressed. Gabapentin worked very well to relieve her pain and she was able to remain alert and engaged. Sounds like a trip to the vet is in order.

Yes it sounds like pain. See the vet. I would try Gabapentin. I would also put her on fish oil and a joint supplement if she's not already on them.

Please also ask your vet about Robaxin.

She is on fish oil and a joint supplement already. I will take her in as soon as we get home. I ended up giving her Tramadol last night, and within an hour she was asleep and we didn't hear a peep out of her all night. This morning she seems very relaxed and is sleeping, back to normal. We are out of state until next Sunday, but I will call tomorrow and schedule an appt. to ask about Gabapentin and Robaxin. She does have elevated creatinine, so I am not sure what effect that will have on treatment for her. I am guessing that she is in pain, much more than we knew. Thank you all for your replies

Glad the Tramadol is helping. If she has kidney disease, that can certainly cause the weakness. I would get new blood work if you haven't done it quite recently. You can give Gabapentin and Tramadol to dogs with kidney disease, but dosages may have to be adjusted. I don't know with Tramadol as much, but with Gabapentin you sometimes have to give less depending on the stage of disease.

My old Lab got very tremble and weak legs. Hard for him to get up because his legs shook so badly. His back legs were giving out. Vet pulled labs. Low Thyroid. It was an amazingly easy fix for us.
