KickReturn
I noticed a spot of fresh blood on Hester's poop. The vet expressed the anal glands and the right side produced a fair bit (>teaspoon, <tablespoon) of fresh blood. She felt no inordinate swelling or mass/tumor. We are treating with antibiotics working on the assumption that it is an infection. The vet commented that she was surprised to see that amount of blood. The rest of Hester's health seems better than ever. Energy, mood, appetite, etc. Does anyone have any experience with this problem. The one thing that has me curious was whether an infection could result in this type of bleeding. The vet felt this was unusual. Maybe this is a Grey thing - they are bleeders afterall. He was not amused with the procedure however: Edited May 1, 2014 by KickReturn
Riverhound
Very fine stink-eye Hester! I have nothing useful to say. Hope everything is ok. Quote Masterful Joe and Naughty N Nice
MaryJane
If they get infected you can get blood in the expressed material. This happened to Larry a few times. You might want to consider getting a culture if the antibiotic is not working after a few days. edited to add -- to clarify, Larry had tinges of blood but it wasn't a full teaspoon of blood. tbhounds
That sounds like an awful lot of blood to be just an infection. I assume your vet did a rectal exam and didn't find anything unusual? Did your vet infuse the gland with an antibiotic ointment? That's some stink eye-Clearly he was NOT amused!

KickReturn
I've been missing the adventures of Hester! Hope everything is fine. How kind - thank you. Hester has had many fine adventures. I definitely owe the forum a few. One highlight was an overnight stay in a casino hotel and dinner in a house full of strangers whom he charmed the pants off of. And then there was the one with the rabbit that wouldn't run away.... Edited May 2, 2014 by KickReturn

Yes, full rectal exam (again not Hester's favourite way to spend an afternoon), everything felt normal. No infusion with antibiotic ointment but I'll ask about that on our follow up visit. Another unfortunate side effect is that he licked the underside of his tail near his anus raw. Edited May 2, 2014 by KickReturn
tbhounds
The fact that he's licking does sound like it may be infection. Def see if your vet will infuse the affected gland with ointment (Animax works well).
heartdogs
One of my granddogs has had this happen several times & Comet makes faces like Hester. The vet asked if we've changed her food recently, She has been ok after being treated. Good luck to you & Hester. Guest grey_dreams
Zuki had this when he first came home. He had an impacted and infected gland that I first noticed within a few days of him being home because a little blood came out. The vet did a full express (I didn't see it because I was comforting Zuki near his head), and my friend told me that a lot of stuff came out mixed with blood. So maybe the quantity of blood you saw wasn't pure blood per se but a mix with other discharge. The vet washed the gland out with some kind of disinfectant/antibiotic solution, and then infused the gland with antibiotic ointment. Plus a round of oral antibiotics. Zuki was fine after that and it never happened again. The procedure is quite painful (but not as painful as if the gland ruptures), and Zuki also gave some pretty awesome stink eye. He was always a bit wary around that vet after that, but luckily we mostly saw a different vet in the practice, so it worked out fine. lukasmom
Luka had an infected anal gland and when it was expressed at the vet a lot of blood came out. I was so glad I took him in. After a round of anti-biotics he was as good as new. I could tell he felt a lot better after the vet visit.
