silverfish
I thought some of you might be interested in the video DH took of Sid walking before his corn surgery. It clearly shows the difficulty he has on hard surfaces like tarmac, compared to his relative comfort walking on grass. And here's a picture of his pad about a week after the surgery, during a dressing change. The shininess is due to the surgical glue they used. He seems to be doing really well. I'm taking him back to the Queens Hospital at Cambridge university tomorrow for a check-up and in another couple of weeks the stitches will come out. Fingers crossed that there's no dehiscence. : Edited February 23, 2014 by silverfish Quote The plural of anecdote is not dataBrambleberry Greyhounds My Etsy Shop
DunesMom
Wow. Ear pets and treats for Sid. Please keep posting updates! Kipper is functionally a tripod most of the time now due to the worst corn (which is bizarre and most of the pad), but we are reluctant to do surgery because he's got corns on all four paws, and on all but one weight-bearing toe. The long healing time would put more stress on the other paws/corns. Hearing about Sid's experience is helpful. Thank you. silverfish
Poor Kipper. It's been bad enough for Sid just having the one corn, being a tripod. I feel so bad for those whose dogs have multiple corns on multiple feet. Does Kipper wear boots? I'm needing to get some for Sid. GreyPoopon
Oh that poor guy. He was in agony. I'm glad you were able to detect the problem and have something done about it. silverfish
Thank you all, yes he was in considerable pain. You can understand that, before we found the corn and had an official diagnosis, we thought that we might lose him. He could not have gone on for long like that, and the vets were thinking it was his back. It had got to the point where he couldn't even get himself out to the garden to pee, because we have a patio he couldn't get across. I hope Sid heals quickly. Our Master and Galgo Marco each had one corn removed surgically a number of years ago and so far they have not come back. I hope Sid has the same success. Oh, that's good to hear! How long did they take before they could walk comfortably without the bandages? Did you put boots on them afterwards? scullysmum
Thank goodness you found the corn, the way Sid was collapsing in the video was just like Sadi on her bad days (she had severe spinal arthritis). Here's hoping that the surgery is a complete success. Btw. What does rehiscence mean? silverfish
Mel, that was one of my fears, before I found the corn, that it was something bad going on with his spine. Dehiscence is when an apparently healed incision just opens up, having failed to knit properly. I've seen it happen as the stitches come out, kind of like being unzipped. It would be particularly bad news for Sid, being a tripod. I've just come back from a follow-up appointment with his surgeon. Sadly, poor Sid has an infection in his toe. Jon is not too concerned, he said that on the whole it's looking very good, with the wound itself looking very clean. It may be a stitch abscess, or just from the sore skin, but he's back on Tramadol for the moment and has some Clavaseptin to deal with it. He's also come home without his bandage. It's going to be difficult again for him to walk till the antibiotics get working, but since he also has some soreness between his toes from the bandaging, they think it's best to leave it open to dry out. He'll have some socks and a waterproof bandage to go outside with. Remolacha
Poor Sid, the difference in that video between the grass and the hard surface was unbelievable! I am sorry he has the infection, but I don't think such things are too unusual, and I am glad they left off the bandage so he wouldn't have more problems with his toes. that he continues to heal well! silverfish
Yes, the difference between the grass and tarmac was very marked, wasn't it? They have a copy at Cambridge university now for teaching purposes! They were very impressed with it. I was kind of horrified when I saw him struggle out without the bandage, because it will be difficult for him and for us in the next few days, but I'm glad they left it off, too. I was supposed to take him back to my own vets today for a bandage change but I don't think they'd have wanted to make that decision, so I'm pleased he was seen by his surgeon today. Thanks Mel - all healing thoughts very much welcomed here! Quote The plural of anecdote is not dataBrambleberry Greyhounds My Etsy Shop

I feel so bad for those whose dogs have multiple corns on multiple feet. Does Kipper wear boots? I'm needing to get some for Sid. Kipper has Therapaw boots. He hates them, like all boots. He either statues or does this weird foot-shaking duck walk and nearly falls. But they are incredibly cushiony compared with all the other boots we looked at or tried. He's more tolerant of the house slippers by Therapaws, but he still manages to lose them the minute you leave the room. Then he looks really innocent upon your return. Hope Sid is feeling better soon and the infection dies quickly! It's really important to us that this corn stays gone, once he's healed. Sid is very tolerant of the Woodrow Wear slippersocks for dogs, and the Pawz boots. He's using the slippersocks inside the Pawz boots when he goes out for a pee at the moment. But it's not going to be enough for 'pavement pounding'. Wow, it was like the minute he hit the pavement he was going "ouch"...."ouch"....with every step. Poor boy.
