3DogNite
Tonight we are watching Lazer go thru really his first difficult breathing "spell" . He has CHF He coughs/pants/wheezes when he lays down so he want's to continue standing and he is so tired that he is a bit unstable standing ,,, also his tongue is blue'ish/grey in color so I know he is NOT getting enough oxygen! I'm trying not to panic, it will be an E-Vet visit if he gets worse.... I'm really wondering if I can give him some Tramadol tonight to calm him,, let him sleep????? or do I let him stay outside in the cool air where he - at the moment - is the most comfortable... and take a wait and see attitude? he is on the usual meds for CHF - vetmedin, plavix, diltiazem, analapril, fuorsimide,, and the research I've been doing isn't giving me any warnings that I shouldn't give tramadol ~~ Anyone awake out in GT land ------ ??? At the moment he is outside in the cool Arizona Dry night. and is actually laying down. When he is standing his, head is pushed forward, neck flat and back is flat. I know this all doesn't sound good, but I think we are just at the start of his acute phase..... and if we can get thru this tonight - tomorrow could be a brighter day thanks lorinda, worried mom Quote lorinda, mom to the ever revolving door of Foster greyhounds Always in my heart: Teala (LC Sweet Dream) , Pepton, Darbee-Do (Hey Barb) , Rascal (Abitta Rascal), Power (Beyond the Power), and the miracle boy LAZER (2/21/14), Spirit (Bitter Almonds) 8/

greysmom
I'm no help either, Lorinda, just hoping Lazer can get through this OK. What would they be doing at the e-vet and can you do any of that at home? Can you call them about the tramadol question? 3DogNite
Put him in an oxygen tent... without the TCL from mom... guess I could call... JJNg
I hope you've taken him to the e-vet by now, but if he's having trouble breathing and his tongue is blue/grey, he needs to be given oxygen and likely also additional meds. Medication to help him relax and sleep is not going to help his breathing/oxygenation and may even make it worse. 3DogNite
He was doing ok for a while. Now he can't get comfortable laying down. he can breath panting while standing.... but he can't stand or walk around all night can he. DH and I have differing opinions on the e vet Quote lorinda, mom to the ever revolving door of Foster greyhounds Always in my heart: Teala (LC Sweet Dream) , Pepton, Darbee-Do (Hey Barb) , Rascal (Abitta Rascal), Power (Beyond the Power), and the miracle boy LAZER (2/21/14), Spirit (Bitter Almonds) 8/

If I'm understanding Lazer's symptoms correctly, Lazer is suffering badly. IMO, this is ER worthy and he needs veterinary attention ASAP. I consider Lazer's condition a life-threatening breathing crisis. Just my experiences, not only could he collapse from lack of oxygen, but he could overheat (hyperthermia) from such physical stress while desperately struggling to breathe in air. If fluids build-up in his lungs/chest it's like drowning on top of everything else.
silverfish
I would be VERY careful giving him any drugs that a vet hasn't prescribed right now. For instance, the opiates/opioids (like Tramadol) actually depress breathing, and you don't want that. E-vet is my advice, and quickly. Good luck! 3DogNite
He just woke up.... wanted outside so he's made it this far and seems better overall. I didn't give him any other meds... I don't underestimate the severity of his issues! And I know we are not out of the woods yet! riverbosun
Likely he needs meds such as a diuretics and something to make his heart pump more effectively if he's in CHF. E-Vets makes sense. I know Lazer's past history so hopefully today you can get him into your regular vet and have him checked out. Time4ANap
Just seeing this now. It's important that he get oxygen and that they get the fluids out of him with diuretics so he can breathe and get oxygen to his system. From your description, he is in severe distress. I know it's hard to have him in a tent where you can't comfort him, but the oxygen is what he needs. Thinking good thoughts for Lazer. Quote Camp Broodie.
