Yamaha_gurl
My Bella (6 yrs old on Tuesday) started yelping a couple of times at night, while trying to move in her bed (2 second small yelps), she was fine during the day, just a little more quiet than usual, no panting. I thought it was just a pulled muscle, well last night same thing, and this AM she doesn't want to get up and go pee outside (could be that it' pouring rain though). I have her booked with the vet for Monday at 8:00am, but I'm wondering if anyone has any thoughts a to what this could be? She stands fine, and walks fine. She wasn't doing anything major, just regular walkies and zoomies I just want to have some info incase the vet starts brainstorming...I like to be prepared. Thoughts? Anyone have neck/back issues with greys? She's eating fine, poops good...so I'd be inclined to rule out tummy issues. I have, and she is not flinching at all. What exactly is Gabapentin, a pain reliever? The thing is, Bella is only 6...I wouldn't think she'd have "old age" issues, no offense Shelby sweetie! Brindles
Gabapentin is an analgesic that works on the nervous system rather than as an anti-inflammatory medicine. It's often used in LS patients since they tend not to respond to NSAIDS. Echo had back problems that went undiagnosed by five different vets. She rarely yelped but she did have trouble getting up and down. When you feel on Bella's spine, how hard are you pressing? And where, exactly? Muscles? Vertebrae? They say to use about 12 lbs of pressure. JAJ2010
Totally in left field here... Does she have blankets on her bed that could have been hiding a hard comfy toy? OwnedBySummer
Once you rule out major stuff with the vet, perhaps a trip to the chiropractor might help? I've learned that chiropractic-correctible injuries can show up several months AFTER the actual event so what she did yesterday or today is possibly not the correct time frame to be looking at. Did she take a tumble while running in the last month or so? Quote Lisa B. Yep, they certainly can. Sometimes injuries don't reveal themselves until things start to heal and loosen up. That would be worth a vet visit imo. Not an emergency, but it's probably worth it to take her in. Hope your girlie gets to feeling better soon! brindlehound
Does Bella normally shake her head and is she reluctant to do so now? , Magic was reluctant to shake his head but seemed fine otherwise. I took him to the vet and he figured out that Magic had an ear infection pretty quickly. Good luck at the vet. I hope you get a good report. Yamaha_gurl
Yes, we haven't heard her shake her neck in a while...and even this morning, she went to shake it and then stopped, hmmm could be that too...BUT, she is crying when getting up, so I dunno. Guess we'll just wait and see. cleptogrey
hopefully your vet will check her entire spine, neck and legs. mine did w/ willie wonka when we went thru a similar episode. willie had lumbar stensosis(sp?) which is basically the narrowing of the spine and nerves are sporatically pinched. i also have it- yoga helped me- not the chiropracter ....but i'm not a dog. for willie a basic anti-inflammatory worked really well- plain old fashioned asprin. my vet fortunately did not send us for a mri/xray or anything costly. the manipulation told him exactly where the problem was- ah my vet's years of experience paid off. btw- willie showed it initially by nipping at me- and he was a total non-biter or reactive pup w/ humans. that was the key that he was in pain. terriers are pretty stoic and never scream- just let out a bite. he lived an active, very active life for the next 5 years. TheFullHouse
If she went head first into the screen door, my guess would be a pretty sore neck. Arrow sprain/strained his neck once by shaking a big pillow too hard. Yeah, I know, goober. His neck was quite sore for some time. My first clue was he wouldn't shake his head like he usually did and cried if he tried. His was limited to his neck. WHanson12
Our Molly is 10 years old & was diagnosed within the past year by OSU's ortho dept as having a nerve issue in her neck which is causing symptoms/problems with her hind legs: weakness in her hind legs, abnormal gait & walk frequently, but no audible sounds of pain. At that point rather than opting for a $1500 MRI of her neck (no pet insurance), we're trying the conservative route of Gabapentin & Rimadyl which seems to give her some relief. She still plays with her squeakies & occasionally will run with our other Grey girl. Molly's advancing age is probably a contributor. Tramadol is a human pain med that is also prescribed for K9's (very effective), although I'd consult the vet before administering that with the other meds Molly is on currently.I don't recall Molly having any injuries in the past several months. Hope Bella is doing much better soon!

GreyPoopon
Betsy has had a few bouts of neck stiffness. During one, she will do things like yelp when getting up, hesitate on stairs/ramp, shake more carefully, eat/drink more slowly/cautiously (bowls are on floor), and limit her pre-meal dinner dance. The first bout started out so badly she was shaking, and some oh-so-helpful soul told me it looked like she was having a stroke. The vet diagnosed it in about 20 seconds by moving her head in different directions (he checked the rest of her too). Yamaha_gurl
Well, I spoke too soon. Bella put on a fake show on Sunday and during her vet visit(Monday) for her neck issue, she was 100% fine. Then last night and today is a whole different story, she cried the whole way down the stairs Take her back to the vet? Chiro? Let her rest for a few days/no walkies? Accupucture? Thoughts, ideas, advice? DaisyDoodle
No chiro without an MRI. Was just told that yesterday by the veterinary neurologist who examined Daisy for her neck and spine issues. She said that chiropractic could make a ruptured disc worse, so an MRI is essential. I would suggest acupuncture, however. Daisy was given Gabapentin and Tramadol (we haven't started Tramadol yet). Depending on the type of injury and other issues your pup might have, the vet might try Robaxin (methocarbamol), NSAIDs, prednisone (NEVER given w NSAIDS). Pred seems to be going out of favor, from what I've heard. IMHO, a responsible chiropractor shouldn't work on your dog (or you) without you confirming that things have been checked out and, preferably, you have a copy of the results for them. Quote Lisa B.
