Thyroid Cancer

Ok so we have had our baby Bow for 3 years now she will be 9 years old at the end of March. In the last 6 months she has had a couple odd episodes difficulty breathing, increased heart rate, appears in a lot of pain both which resulted in expensive ER trips with no diagnosis found.

I had noticed a lump on her neck while petting her a little while ago and mentioned it to our vet.

This Monday our Vet aspirated it and called today with the results...

Basically, the results said the lump was chronic hemmorage with neoplasia thyroid in origin (ie. thyroid cancer). And the lump was suspected to be adenocarcinoma :(

Because of what they found, her age, and the percentage of thyroid lumps that are cancerous (87%) they suspect it's cancer. From what I read if it is cancerous this is a very aggressive type of cancer and my Vet wants to move as quickly as possible.

She reccomended MedVet in Columbus Ohio to get a consult and then have them biopsy the lump to determine if it's cancerous and then go from there. (the lump is in a very delicate spot she metioned jugular vein and laryngeal nerve)

Is anyone familar with MetVet in Columbus, I know a lot of people go to Ohio State when their Greys have had cancer, I mentioned that to my Vet and she said she is completely happy either one I would choose she just to reccommend MedVet.

We are going to set up the appointment ASAP and haul our butts to CBus. I know many of you have had experience with Greyhound Cancer has anyone have experience with thyroid cancer? Any words of encouragement/info from other GreyPeople would be great to hear right now.

And lets keep our fingers crossed its not cancer (preparing for the worst hoping for the best).

Thanks!!!!

Has your vet done chest x-rays? It might be useful to know if any cancer has spread to the lungs before you go too far down the road trying to treat a cancer that might already be beyond your control.

(Sorry. I know that's not a nice thought, but I can't think of a better way to say that.) :grouphug

I'm sorry you're dealing with this. I live in Columbus. When it comes to greyhound health, there is no better place than OSU.

Definitely get in to see a specialist ASAP whomever you chose. If it were me I would go to whomever would see me sooner. They will not do surgery without first doing an x-ray to see if there are lung mets. :goodluck

Agreed! I just made to trip from NJ to let the wonderful talents vets perform a thryoidectomy on my girl. She had the very same diagnosis as your hound- thyroid carcinoma. Not sure why you would go anywhere else.

Feel free to pm me if I can answer any questions you may have- surgery, prognosis, chemo, hotels to stay.......

We adopted our Tina after she'd had her thyroid removed for thyroid carcinoma (she also had heartworms, but that's another story). She had no recurrence of the cancer at all, and was on Soloxine for life. She had to have bloodwork and get the levels adjusted when she first came to us, but then was fine. The previous vet recommended chest X-rays every 3 months, but our vet didn't feel it was necessary after a year. She lived a life filled with joy and passed suddenly from a massive stroke, nothing related to the cancer at all.

Best wishes to your sweetie!

My mother had thyroid cancer!

They removed most of her thyroid, and she has lived a normal life for many years on Soloxine--until NOW when her dose is suddenly creating hyperthyroid symptoms--but she'll be OK. My point is that thyroid cancer, in people at least, is quite survivable.

It depends on how the tumor comes out. With Austin, it didn't come out easy (in pieces) and he lived maybe 3-4 months -- but they were good months and he recovered from the surgery pretty well. He was about your girl's age.

I'd do the surgery again if it were my dog and I had a good surgeon. Sending lots of prayers.

I'll be sending you good thoughts. We lost our Tinsel to thyroid cancer. She went in for the surgery to have the lump removed, came out ok, but crashed right afterward and we lost her hours later. sad.gif I was told it was a very aggressive form of cancer. We had had some bleeding/clotting issues a month before the surgery when we did a fine needle aspirate, so there were some special circumstances with her that you probably don't have.

Last year just before Arlo turned 11 we discovered he had a thyroid tumor. It was about the size of a golfball but aspiration only yielded blood and we were not able to biopsy. We took him to a specialty vet clinic in Cary, NC and scheduled the surgery within a few days. The surgery is delicate because the area is so vasucular. The tumor was encapsulated and right behind his esophagus so some times you could not feel it because it would roll around behind the esophagus. I first felt it in Sept 2010 and it came out in January 2011. They got all the tumor with very little bleeding and he was able to come home after one night stay. He heeled nicely and had 4 rounds of chemo in April. He is still alive and is very perky and takes his thyroid medicine twice daily with no problem. I am so glad we attempted the surgery. Although it is not without risk it was well worth it in our case. I wish you the best of luck. Please feel free to PM me, I would like to know your outcome. Sending prayers for your boy. Arlosmom

My point is that thyroid cancer, in people at least, is quite survivable.

:nod I lost my entire thyroid to cancer at 19 and here I am 33 years later.

Actually the surgeon told me that if a person *had* to choose a cancer, thyroid was a good one as it is usually much more self contained and doesn't spread like some other cancers.

We had a foster dog that was returned to us with thyroid cancer. At that point, the tumor was large and quite involved and so, inoperable. She lived a very happy 9 months getting spoiled silly by her foster mom. Thyoid cancer (and hers was an adenocarcinoma) can vary a great deal in aggressiveness. Bailey's was not aggressive or fast growing. If it had been caught early, it would have been operable, and she'd likely still be around today. The vet who provided us the DX didn't seemed concerned about mets. What we had to look out for was if the tumor began to interfere with her breathing or eating. Wishing the OP tons of good thoughts for her pup. :hope

This is what I was told as well by my endocrinologist when a calcified nodule was found on my thyroid. It's not cancerous, but it wouldn't be the end of the world if it were :)
