Depends Or Pampers For Anal Incontenince

Does anyone know what size pullups or depends that will fit an 80 lb grey for anal incontinence. Arlo just can't make it out in the am before his tail goes up an out it comes. Even he looks embarrassed and my husband is a weeny and always manages to step in it.

I can't answer your sizing question, but I would guess that it is easier to clean the floor (assuming solid-surface), than to clean the hairy backside of a diapered greyhound. Could you set an alarm a littler earlier to get him out sooner, or set him up in a sleeping area closer to the door?

Hold Arlo's tail down between his legs as you escort him to the door. That should keep him from pooping 'til he gets outside.

He is funny about where he sleeps and roams around a bit at night depending on which of my other greys roams around. He is mostly going on the rug in the living room although last nite he went in his bed after coming to my side of the bed at 1:00 am and I did not wake up. He does not like to sleep where Kingfish sleeps and if Kingfish comes in the room he will get up and leave. His poops are mostly very firm and are easy to pick up but my husband just freaks. ( I wish he would just shut up and let me deal with it.)

 

This morning he went out and while waiting for his breakfast to get fixed he started walking in circles and I saw the tail go up and I could not get him out the door fast enough.

Another option: reduce the stool quantity. It's the only thing that gets our guy Bumper through the night as he has the same 'challenge' and for Bumper, it's because of nerve damage in his lower spine. By the time he feels the poop coming, it's often too late. By reducing the volume, he can easily hold it all night.

 

We have 0 issues with Bumper on raw food and we once made the attempt to go back to kibble with unfruitful results. He pooped every night (in the house) for 2.5 weeks before we gave up and went back to raw. Magically no more night pooping...at all.

 

Something to consider and if you are not a fan of raw, maybe it could be the lesser of the two evils....

I had a dog with no anal control for many years. I never diapered him for this very reason.

 

Also tried to diaper a female foster dog once who was in heat....they are not made to fit a dog and she would not leave it alone....

 

Hope the tail holding will work...or maybe moving the evening feeding.

The food we are using now has been great for firmness in stool but does make them poop more volume. Currently we are feeding at 5 pm for the evening meal. What type of raw did you use?

To answer your original question, I had to get the largest size diaper available for my 60 lb female so you are definitely in pull up territory, which I think you might have difficulty keeping on (although you could buy the cloth diaper covers from a local pet store to go over them). Additionally, you will need to cut a hole into each diaper for a tail and with the current technology (lots of absorbing "beads") unless you somehow seal where you cut, you'll have those beads falling out everywhere. I used medical tape to seal around the hole - believe me, it was a bit painstaking.

 

Pet stores sell pads to go into the cloth diaper covers, but I don't think that will help you - they're meant to absorb urine (and don't work all that well at that), so you likely need another solution.

After hearing some of these replies I think the diaper thing may not be a good idea. I am ok with using some Nature's Miracle where it lands and picking it up and going on but my husband it not. Arlo is in good health otherwise so I am looking for any other solutions I can find. The raw feeding may have to be it.

I got my first dog Rascal when I lived in Wilmington...I just noticed your location. He ended up with what was diagnosed as FCE from NC State vet hospital. So his was chronic...that was many years ago when greyhounds were pretty uncommon around there.

 

I am heading down that way next week....are there any fenced in dog parks now? I usually stay with friends but they had conflicts and I am on my way to Sandy Paws so I am going to stay in a hotel. Dylan and Mollie are coming with me and Dylan much prefers to poop off lead. I hadn't taken the time to look if there are any dog parks there now.

I was also going to mention changing feeding times, but was going to say to feed earlier so he will poop before bed. You'll have to play around and see what works for you.

 

I feed raw so of course I think that's a great idea. Raw stool is dryer and less smelly so your DH may be less offended by just cleaning that up too.

We started with commercially produced packages, frozen, mailed to our house. After a month or so, we started making our own using various protein sources, including poultry, beef, pork, duck, some fish, turkey, etc. It was and is easy to get going and our dogs are loving the variety, textures, etc. so if you do go this route, just dive in and hope for the best. You'll know pretty quickly if it's working or not.

 

And believe me, I understand the challenge of feeding different diets...it is very inconvenient. Our 2 cats free range and eat a separate kibble so we have had to figure out a way for them to not cross-feed. I chalk it up to pets being individuals and sometimes having to be more flexible than we'd like to be. But again, maybe the clean up is the lessor of evils for you. Good luck!

I have never used any of the dog parks for mine because a lot of people here do not follow the rules. This fenced area has recently been added so it may not be as well known. I spoke with someone the other day who does like it though they are a non-grey person.

I have a 13+ yr old male who also suffers occasional oops poops (usually a trail to the door). I know he is deeply embarrassed when this happens so I am extremely proactive about making him go outside before he realizes that he has to go potty. BTW, I feed my boys supper about 7:30 pm, send them outside before bedtime, and then let my old guy out first thing in the morning before breakfast. Right now, the current schedule seems to be working for him.

 

Also, I agree that cleaning a hairy butt is probably far more onerous than picking up poo!

 

My 11 yr old boy is a p*sser in the house. I adopted him two yrs ago, and while he has come a long way, he will still stealth pee if given the opportunity. Anyway, I tried belly bands and he unloaded soakers in them every time (apparently he did not get the memo), which resulted in an unbelievably stinky wet mess. So I just crate and purchase a lot of pee pads!

Could you put down some poopy pads in strategic places and teach him to go on those? Jrs medical supplies has huge brand new ones for less than $9 each and they are reusable. They worked wonders for my beloved Sheila in the last couple of years of her life.... oops poops and oops pee.

Just wanted to add that we have different diets for our two dogs and it doesn't cause any problems. One gets both raw and non-raw food, but not at the same meal.

 

Perhaps you could make the last meal for this dog a raw one, to reduce the volume. In any case, I think the suggestion of feeding later is a good one. And raw does get digested more quickly than non-raw, so feeding it at 5 p.m. wouldn't solve the problem even though the poop volume would be less.

I can't see a diaper being of much use. One you cut a hole for the tail you are going to still end up with poop on the floor and also mushed all over the dogs hiney. I have seen dog diaper systems that come with a bag that will collect the poop, but then you have a dog walking around with a bag of poop attached to his butt. That not only seems degrading somehow, I can also see any dog going to extreme measures to get the bag off.

There are commercial foods that generate less poop, too -- depends on the dog, and on what you are feeding now. Initially you might try one of the low-residue prescription diets to see if that helps. If your husband doesn't want to feed one dog something different, give him a sharp (but friendly!) smack from me ....

 

We took our late whippet out first thing in the morning (before breakfast) and then again after breakfast; same for his supper. That helped the "as soon as he was done eating" problem. Walking around a little at night -- just around the yard, when he was tottery -- helped squeeze another poop out so he could make it till morning. For him, a half-and-half mix of kibble and canned (store-bought or just homecooked meat) worked very well.

Jake has had many oops incidents due to his LS. As Derek said that's caused by the nerve damage in the lower spine. Jake was embarassed at first but once he got used to me calmly picking it up and telling him it was no big deal I guess he figured it really wasn't a problem. Now he'll often come to me and when I ask if he wants to go out he looks over to the oops mess as if to say "can you clean that up?"

I have noticed that instead of going twice a day, he goes more often but smaller amounts. That's due to the nerve problems fromt he LS. I recently added a 3rd gabapenten and he hasn't had an accident for a few days.

I know he can't help it and he tries to let me know. Sometimes I wake up, sometimes I don't. They have been easy to pick up except last night there was some poop drip across the carpet for the first time. My husband does not realize while he is barking about the mess and smell at no one in particular, that Arlo does feel bad about it.

Near the life-end of some of my senior boys the Poop Fairy occasionally visited. Wally would react like your Shadow if he woke to some on his bed.

Harold has no trouble holding his poop on regular days. But a car ride is guaranteed to produce a poop-fall in the vet's office.

Deb, Gracie, Harold and Pudge le mutt are all on different foods, with H & P's being the pricey prescription kind for their kidney problems. That stuff is so expensive but it has helped them and I figure, they won't be around for too much longer, might as well give them the best.
