Doolin Update

Based on what you said about him being fine until the scratched trachea, I think I would push for at least an x-ray, if not an ultrasound. IBD and/or colitis can flare up even on meds, but the way he's bounced from fine to bad and back to fine doesn't sound like that.

:bighug for Doolin (and you!)

Now that I've learned that Beth's intermittent D issues (never vomiting, except for one incident that I think was a stomach bug) were probably due to pancreatic inflammation, I would also want a cPL test (rule out pancreatitis) and a TLI done (check pancreatic levels). We thought she had sort of IBD tendencies, but it looks like the underlying issue was somewhat different, although it's hard to be completely sure.

He still has the big D, but today he hasn't had to go out so frequently, he has only gone about 3 times, but there was blood in it again.

Something new has popped up though. He keeps having what I call throw up burps. He will make this burping sound (not heaving) and white foamy stuff comes out. Is it because his stomach is empty and he has some sort of acid reflux? I gave him pepcid but it didn't stop him from having his throw up burps.

I am so worried :(

Sounds like he is starting to regurge. It's time for further diagnostic tests. Does your vet have an internal medicine Vet that he could reccomend in your area?? I had a hound that had IBD that was actually life threating at one point-- it's not a disease to be fooled with.

Did I just or somebody else here read something about Manuka Honey for IBD Dogs. I am not good in finding something here, but it would be worthwhile to check it out. :)

Sorry checked and it was posted by 4My2Greys.

Brie,

If you and your vet want you to see an internal medicine specialist for Doolin, let me know and I will give you the name and contact information of the person I use. She's great and I trust her completely.

Pat, thank you, I would like to have her name. I think we are going to need it.

He still has the big D this morning even though he has been on Flagyl and immodiom and hasn't eaten since thursday. Called the vet office this morning and they said they will call back after they talk to our vet, hopefully they will call back soon so we can bring him in. Before his bad stomach days only lasted one morning and then he would be fine. He hasn't been well all week, so it's getting progressively worse.

Brie, we will be thinking good thoughts for Doolin and you. I hope you can get to the bottom of this as it does sound like it's getting worse.

I'm feeling extremely discouraged by our vet.

He called back and said he wants to put him on an anti-nausea medication and something else (don't know what exactly they are right now) and see how he does for the rest of the weekend, and if it doesn't work then he wants to do a biopsy.

Reading online, it sounds like a biopsy is the last thing you do. He hasn't done any blood tests on him, no fecal test, or an x-ray (despite being told several times that this started after the scratched trachea) because he is convinced it's IBD. Shouldn't he have testing done before he can call it IBD? :unsure His issues have been going on for over a month. This dog has been sick nonstop for a week now and is now literally pooping blood. I'm scared something is really wrong with him and waiting it out will only be harmful.

How far away are you from Angel in Boston? They are staffed 24 hours a day for emergencies.

We are about 45 minutes from Angell. There is another e-vet about 20 minutes away from us that we probably will end up going to.

I agree - get an x-ray now!

You can also try Tufts in Grafton - I believe they have an emergency room and I think they are staffed with residents from the vet school.

If your dog has diarrhea that is bloody and is vomiting (in Doolin's case, dry heaves) then the dog needs to get to the vet ASAP.

I'm sorry to say that I think you need to bypass your vet and get him to Angell or another e-vet right away.

Years ago, when I had my previous dog, she got very sick due to a life threatening reaction to Ivermectin (She was being treated for HW) and I took her to Tufts in Grafton in the middle of a hurricane! They admitted her to ICU and kept her for several days and did a great job with her. They saved her life.

We also had good luck with them years ago when one of our horses had a major accident to his eye.

Best of luck to you guys. We will be thinking of you and Doolin.

I'm hoping your on the way to an e-vet now. This can't waiting another minute. As far as your vet goes you need to remember, she may have graduated from Vet School it doesn't mean she wasn't at the bottom of her class. After you get Doolin hopefully straightened out at the e-vet I'd be looking for another vet. Continuing with this vet could very well cost him his life.
