Flying Lynch

4/16/99 - 9/28/10 Age 11

Adopted by me: 6/30/01

Racing name: Flying Lynch

Pet Name: Lynch and Mr. L

Lynch was a long legged FAST racer in the fall of 2000 at the fall nationals and he was purchased at auction for a very large sum of money.

In the spring of 2001, he had an accident on the track, in a night race, he failed to take the turn and ran straight into the rail. His racing kennel trainer thought maybe he had a detached retina due to the accident because he didn’t seem to see well after his accident. When he went to the specialist, he was diagnosed with PRA and within about 2 weeks, he was neutered, teeth cleaned and was on his way to me! I’ll always be grateful to Donna Strawbridge Weeks for bring him to me on her day off, I met her in Indianapolis. (I lived in Cincinnati then)

Lynch was a big boy, tall and lean and semi spooky. He didn’t want to come out of his cage much in the beginning and finally I had to insist that he stay out for a bit every day, and longer every day! By the time he was with me for a year, he was totally blind. But he was a fast learner and had mastered some basic commands that would stay with him for the 9 years he spent with me.

Lynch was loving and sweet and I never once heard him bark I don’t think! He was stoic and easy going and when he occasionally stepped on someone he always looked startled. He ate well and got along with most everyone. His seeing eye dog was Frasier, and then when Frasier left, it was Phantom and when Phantom left, he depended mostly on me. The girls always seemed to give him a little grief, snarking at him when he got too close and they thought he was going to step on them. He loved to have his ears rubbed and hated to have his toenails trimmed in his later years. One of the things that never bothered Lynch was storms, he’d go out and do his business in the worst rain and thunder, not a problem! Until this last month, he always slept on the floor at the foot of my bed, ALWAYS. The last month he’s had a limp in his right leg and the past 2 days he was unable to squat to poop without falling. It was time for Lynch to leave me, and my heart is forever missing a piece that he carried away with him. My big beautiful cow dog is gone and I miss him terribly.

Dogs' lives are short, too short, but you know that going in. You know the pain is coming, you're going to lose a dog, and there's going to be great anguish, so you live fully in the moment with her, never fail to share her joy or delight in her innocence, because you can't support the illusion that a dog can be your lifelong companion. There's such beauty in the hard honesty of that, in accepting and giving love while always aware it comes with an unbearable price. Maybe loving dogs is a way we do penance for all the other illusions we allow ourselves and for the mistakes we make because of those illusions."
