Blood In Stool

Recommended Posts

Hello all! This is Starhound's husband posting..

We had a rather frightening experience yesterday with our little 12-year-old iggy boy, "Spunki". (On Friday the 13th, no less)

Last night, we arrived home to find that Spunki had left an alarming mess on the floor around his bed. It was not just diarrhea--the poor guy had so much blood in his stool that there was barely any "stool" to be seen. Needless to say we contacted our local animal ER and the vet there told us that he was dehydrated and suffering with some sort of gastrointestinal problem.. he is currently being treated overnight with antibiotics, mild painkillers, and IV fluids.

I just called the ER a few minutes ago and I was told that he's doing well, but I'm still worried that something else could be wrong... there was just SO much blood for such a small dog. He seemed completely normal, otherwise. I guess that's one good sign, but I can't help but worry.

Has anyone else experienced something like this? Could it be something serious?

It sounds like a case of HGE (Hemorrhagic Gastroenteritis). You did good by getting him to the vet. The fluids along with antibiotics should do the trick for him.

Our Emmy had a case of this. After 3 days at the vet she was fine.

Way more experience than I'd like to have. As JillysFullHouse said, you were absolutely right to take him to the clinic. I hope he feels better soon.

Don't know if this is the same thing, but a few years ago I was walking Carl and when he went to poop he had diarrhea, then as we walked sort of poopy blood started pouring out of his bottom, then mostly just blood. It scared me half to death, I took him to the vet and it turned out that he had Giardia. He was treated w/antibiotics, put on a bland diet of rice and chicken and a homemade version of Pedialyte. He got better quickly, but lost a lot of weight in a very short period of time, he had good energy, but looked awful until he rehydrated and gained his weight back.

How is he doing today?

So sorry to ear about Spunki's terrible day. Our Milo went through the same thing in late January - excreting a lot of blood and no stool. It was horrifying. But after a couple of overnights at the e-vet (fluids, antibiotics, etc) he was fine. The e-vet thought it was HGE.

Sending good thoughts to you and Spunki.

poor dude! What a scary thing to come home to! Hopefully its "just" what it looks like and nothing more. lots of white light!

(on a side note, What looks like a lot isnt usually as much as you think. Take a tablespoon of water and pour it in a puddle on your lino and it looks like WAY more than what you know it is!)

Our angel, Brandy, had that once. I also took her right away to the vet. I seems that my daughter's post roast gave her a case of gastroenteritis. Light diet, medication and she was fine. Prayers for your little guy.

Our Emmy had a case of this. After 3 days at the vet she was fine.

Yep, that's what I first thought of, too. Renie had it once after a stay in kennels. She was pooping great puddles of what looked like mushy beetroot, there was so much blood in there - and she was vomiting too, and it was almost the same. Scary? Oh yeah!! But as with JillysFullHouse's Emmy, she was fine in about three days, with the right treatment.

I hope your Iggy does as well, and recovers quickly. It knocks the old ones for six. :(

I hope your pup feels better soon.

My new girl Lily had a bout of bloody diarrhea recently. She was acting fine otherwise (no vomiting, etc). I fed her a bland diet, syringe-fed her Pedialyte to keep her hydrated, and did 5 days of Panacur (dewormer). I suspect it was Giardia.

Thank you for all the wellwishes :) Spunki came home this morning.. and literally ran into the house. He certainly isn't feeling lethargic and just seems himself. His stools are still a little bloody, but definately better than the 75% bloody stools of last night. He's on antibiotics, and we took a short walk today with Dewey and Spunki just seemed completely fine. Hoping this is the end of whatever happened.. It was alarming because of the amount of blood and his age.

Thank you all. :grouphug

Glad Spunki is doing ok.

Quite a similar thing happened to our JRT the other week.......had her bloods done and it is colitis and pancreatitis so we have to watch her diet now.

She is on antibiotics at the moment.

Run free our beloved Sir Snowy, Pip, Queenie, Sadie, Tess & Rosie until we meet again......I would rather feel the thorn than to never see the rose
