Oh, I hope they can manage this for you and Chase! And for your DD too. :(

Jim died of CHF. He was thirteen and a half, and he'd had a little bit of a murmur for a couple of years which the specialist hadn't thought worthy of any treatment. Then he deteriorated and we went back and his disease had progressed quite rapidly and he had several problems, including calcification of his aorta and a weak valve and an enlarged atrium to go along with that. He gave him 3 - 6 months (and several meds) and he lasted four. He was old, and actually, it was a good passing - he died very peacefully in his sleep. There are worse things to pass away from. He'd had a great day, for an old guy, the day before. He'd been for his usual gentle walks, which he loved. Had a special dinner (these were quite frequent as he got old!) and second helpings. Seemed perfectly well during the evening, but didn't last the night. I wish all my dogs could go like that.

I do hope Chase can be helped and make it through this very difficult time to be with you for years to come. :hope

thank you, yes I need a million hugs. :( and the mojito I just poured. ANyone wanna come over and join in?!?

Chest films, ekg, echo were all done. It showed her heart was the size of a canteloupe, on echo they found infiltrative neoplastic processes hence the likelihood of lymphoma. They were going to drain the fluid and look at that to see if they could find cancer cells in the fluid.

draining the fluid, and more so the catheter to do so, could 'tickle' her heart and cause her heart to go into ventricular tachycardia and she could defibrilate, so there is a small chance she might not even make it home which would devastate me, since we really didnt say goodbye this morning, nor did DD get a chance. Though that is the chance when anyone leaves the house, isnt it.

and to top it off, DH split the a$$ out of his pants this morning and he feels like he is walking around in a$$less chaps. :o he was going to change when he brought Chase home at lunchtime but they have had her all day so he didnt. And he was too busy to even be able to dash into Old Navy or somewhere to buy a pair of jeans.

I insisted on a consult with Dr Couto by phone, though its unlikely we would do chemo unless there was an easy round that could be decently tolerated to buy us some extra time...

tonya, i am going to try to find your posts but if you could possibly post or pm me some details I would really appreciate it. i am devastated but I would like to know what I can kindof expect, and its nice to have a btdt shoulder to cry on...

That's a bit more serious then CHF :(

It sounds like she's tamponotic, which is fluid in the pericardial space, which is fluid between the heart muscle and the thin membrane that covers it. When the pericardial space fills with fluid it makes it harder for the heart to work. Think sort of like when you hear about someone's brain swelling in their skull...it gets bigger and bigger with nowhere to go. It's a delicate procedure to tap the fluid out because, as your vet told you, touching the beating heart can cause it to spasm (dysrhythmia). and in dogs, I've heard of this mostly in cases of either heart lymphoma or hemangiosarcoma of the heart...both cancerous. Praying for better news for you!

Oh no... I am sorry. :(

If your vet isn't confident about doing this, can he refer her to a specialist in cardiology to have it done? Sending many hugs and good thoughts for Chase! :bighug:hope

she spent all day and $1200 at the cardiologist and internal medicine specialists today. They removed 1.225l from around her heart. And its 3;40am and she is up pacing and appears a little out of her gourd. poor girl.

CHF can be conroled with meds. I have an 11 yr old that was diagnosed with chf over a year ago. It's controled with enaparil, 7.5 mg twice a day and reglan, 15mg twice a day. She is active though she doesn't run like she did did but jogs across the yard instead of running. Some use Lasic but my girl lost all of her appetite when she was on it so the doc switched to enaparil.

the cardiologist didnt send her home on any meds. it wasnt chf but pericardial effusion (massive). I have the feeling she wouldnt have had days left if she hadnt been seen by the cardio. hopefully now she has weeks or months if we can keep things somewhat stable.?
