Guest SoulsMom
Went to the vet today as his 'rash' has just gotten worse. It is a staph infection after all. I need to figure out what he can 'wear' when I'm asleep or not at home to keep him from licking it. It's tricky because he kinda freaks out when he has to wear anything other than his jammies or coat. I was thinking a belly band would work, but I don't have one and no idea where to buy one And here is once again why I love my vet---he really, really cares. Given what Soul went through last year, he expressed how relieved he was that Soul's rash was only a staph infection and nothing more serious. And when I mentioned how Soul suddenly one day forgot how to do the stairs in our house he wanted to check out his ears and eyes as well. He gave us a week and a half of antibiotics and told me to call for more if it wasn't cleared up by the time we finished. He said that the normal course of meds is three weeks but he didn't want to risk upsetting Soul's tummy if otherwise unecessary.
Guest mountain4greys
I hate these staph infections. Elvis has one, and we've been fighting it for a year. Everytime we thought it was gone, we quit giving meds, and it was back. We finally did a biopsy. The meds couldn't keep it way, so it was time for a specialist. Elvis finally went the day before Thanksgiving. The biopsy results told the specialist what it wasn't, but didn't say what it was exactly. But a slide test showed a bacterial infection. By Monday or Tues, we'll know exactly how to fight this beast. The specialist said it will go away this time, he was going to fight it aggressively, probably a 3 week deal. I'm just happy it will be gone. Amber, I hope Soul will get over this to. What a pain in the butt these staph infections are.

Guest SoulsMom
after what we've been through I'll take a staph infection over the other stuff any day! Jimmy, Soul also had a reoccuring staph infection a couple of years ago--which seemed to finally clear up just in time for his GI issues to kick his butt . . . . oy. Dr S did say that keeping him from licking it was an absolute MUST to get it to heal. Maybe you could try 'pants' too? Someone suggested boxer shorts . . . . oh, he's gonna love that
greysmom
Where's it at , Amber? Would a mandage cover it enough? Guest SoulsMom
It's on mostly on his wee-wee but some on his inner thighs and near his coin purse. I need something that he won't be able to get out of, but also that he won't get caught on anything when I'm not at home. As for his jammies, he only has nightgowns that don't cover his nether regions, so those are of no help . . . . Maybe boxer briefs?
Guest eaglflyt
Keeping them from licking a sore spot is always a challenge. I hope Soul gets well soon and that you come up with the perfect garment to cover all of his sore parts. Amber, I feel for you. been there done that type of thing and yes, I used boys boxer briefs. put them on and cut a small hole for the tail. Amazingly, Rocky didn't mind. He wore them for a month. Not to be doom gloom, but we had to be on antibiotics for 4 weeks. Just couldn't get rid of the staff. Try the boxer briefs. I don't remember specifically, but think I bought a pack of medium childs and they fit perfect. and Rocky didn't mind. however, all my friends and the UPS guy who came to the door thought I was nuts Quote Pam with greys Avril, Dalton & Zeus & Diddy the dachshund & Miss Buzz the kitty Devotion, Jingle Bells, Rocky, Hans, Harbor, Lennon, NoLa, Scooter, Naomi and Scout at the bridge
Guest FrostyBottoms
oh Amber, I'm sorry! Would giving him Benadryl while your gone be an option? It will make him sleepy and maybe help the itch???? Not sure if it would help a staph itch, but i know when Vinny is on the stuff, he is a zombie and doesn't have the energy to lick anything. Maybe ask the Dr.
ahicks51
Anyone had success combating a staph infection with manuka honey? jenners
You DO have a wonderful vet And as much as I would love to see them, maybe we should knot see photos of Soul in his boxers? We've had no reason to try it, but I'm curious as to whether it would work. That's what I was going to ask, too, but when you use manuka honey, it has to be bandaged. That stuff is sticky but excellent stuff! Since it's on his well, um, manly parts - how would one bandage it without it looking like a feminine product stuck underneath him??? sorry Soul..... Guest ctgreylover
Poor Soul. I wish I had a better idea. I hope the boy's undies work. there is a way to use a towel around the neck instead of the e-collar. but I know you are concerned about leaving him alone/catching on something
cmc333
My Gypsy hates, absolutely HATES wearing clothes. I had to get her some bad girl panties and the only way she couldn't rip them off was to put them on her (with a maxi pad) then put the 4 legged pj's on her. She can't figure out how to get the pj's off. I bought "ready made" ones cause I wanted them in a hurry. I got them from GTer Fritofeet. Sue also makes custom ones, but I figure you'd need them sooner rather than later. Gypsy weighs 53 pounds and the 26" fits her perfectly. Good luck - it's so hard when the houndie likes to be nekkid! Guest SoulsMom
Karen, I considered a towel around his neck but I think that would freak him out and I'd be too paranoid to leave it on him when I'm not at home. . . . . Good thought Jeannie, but I doubt the benedryl would work because I've actually caught him 'sleep-licking' the area
Guest greyt2love
Oh, poor Soul ! I hope you can kick this fast !! I'd try the boxers, Amber. Even with the belly band, Rex can lick his thighs. If the boxers don't work, then a belly band could be a fall back step. I have a pink one that can go in the mail tomorrow if you want it ! It's the only one of his new ones I haven't used yet. And, yes, Rex has worn one of the 2 pink ones that I won, so I'm not trying to push it off on Soul. PM me if you want it , Amber !!
cleptogrey
if the shorts don't work, i'm pretty sure a bite-not collar will. he will not be able to bend his neck to get around to lick. somewhere is a thread where i described how to make one out of corrugated cardboard, a washcloth and duct tape. pm me if you can't find it and are interested.
