Guest bonnebike Posted June 29, 2009 Share Posted June 29, 2009 It was just a couple of weeks ago that we noticed he was slowing down at the end of walks. Then he skipped a breakfast -- something he has never done. We only got really concerned when he looked like he had lost some weight. After he refused another meal we took him into see our vet. Blood work was not definitive although they did find some suspicious cells that could indicate lymphoma. We were referred to OSU (Oregon State) where he had an ultrasound and needle biopsy which confirmed lymphoma. We met with the oncologist on the day before we were to leave on vacation (wedding in Ohio). It was a difficult time. He presented several options and thought we could wait until we got back before deciding. Chemo was just too expensive for us so we opted for prednisone which the oncologist thought would give him a couple of really good months and then a rapid decline. We left him with our pet sitter, Katy, a vet student at OSU. We called and texted multiple times a day. Sadly Del was sicker than any of us thought. He did not last a week. Katy called last night crying and saying it was time. Del could no longer stand and his gums were white. She thought he was bleeding internally. Our regular vet made a house call and put Del to sleep. Del was a super mellow guy that loved his couch, walks, and food. He hated to run. I think he took retirement very seriously. He never missed an opportunity to lean against a stranger that offered to pet him. He was a great ambassador for his breed. We are going to miss him a lot.
