Been At The Vets Today.. Brain Tumor Is Suspected

Was at the veterinary hospital today, with the dog mentioned in other threads. The vet strongly suspects either a brain tumour, or maybe an issue of underlying pain, but god knows were. Thet did extendes bloodwork and checked the urine, but don't get the full answers until thursday. If everything there looks fine, we will put him back on meloxicam, för 10 - 14 days, to see if the change on the 4 day course was just a coincident or not.

IF he responds well to the meoxicam through the prolonges period, he will be referred to an orthopedic (spelling?) and they will do a PETscan (Positron emission tomography), I think it is the word in english, I tried to google it. Anyway, when they inject a radioactive isotop in the bloodstream and then scan the dog to look for 'hot spots', ie active inflammatory processes. As the dog refuses to show ANY signs of palpable pain. He is a tough guy and usualyy just grinch his teeth and 'gets through it', neither than show any signs of pain/discomfort/etc - even when we KNOW were and what that hurts, dog just 'stands through it.'

IF he do not responds well to the meloxicam, ie it was a coincidence that we saw an improvement on the 4 day course, he will be referred to a neurologist and they will do an CT-scan and MRI ('magnetic X-ray') of the brain.

I have thought about a brain tumour during the time passed, as his behavoiur is so erractic and difficult to explain, but still - just the fact vet seriousley mention that a brain tumour actully was a pretty strongly considered diagnosis, scared the hell out of me =/ Because a brain tumour - then there is nothing more to do :(

Forgive me if I'm confusing this but is this the same boy you suspected SLO?

You are on one bad rollercoaster ride for sure, I am so sorry. I wish I could offer something here, but I have no idea what that would be.

All I can say is we're on the ride with you, and lots of prayers are coming your way!!

Ryan's neurologist was convinced he had a brain tumor or cancer that was responsible for his pain.

The MRI was read by a radiologist just passing by and he saw none, but she was still convinced. It was again read by a few other radiologists and no tumors/cancer was found anywhere.

Good luck

Same one, yes =/ The vet couldn't say if it was SLO in early stages or not, but she thinks the fur and the claws are a separate issue. He will be referred to a specialist later on if needed (she should also consult a colleague who knows SLO if they could have it without loosing the nails, if so, we will check it up asap). But at the moment there biggest concern is the behavoural changes, so they will focus on that isse in teh nearest week.

But most probably - we have at least TWO types of problem going in, the one (pain? brain? other?) causing the bevaioural symptoms, and the other that is causing the fur and claw-related symptoms.

Sigh.. he is only 4½, been extremly sound before, and wham - it feels like it strikes from every direction =/

He had a GOOD day yesterdag, was all happy, normal and so. Until evening, when he acted all messed up and really strange when he met a coworker of mine, that he has met several times befor. It was outside and dark when they met, maybe the dark had something to do with it, but still =/

We have your boy tucked in our prayers, he's so young!!

Realistic or not, I sure would hang on to Trudy's post. Please keep us posted and we're hoping for the very best outcome and comfort.

I know this seems easy to say, but hang in there

I will not give up unless there is really nothing else to do.

But I dound out today that hos insurance will NOT pay for either magnetic x-rays or CT-scans. Nothing said abouth the PET-scan though, but doub't they will pay for that either =/

That's harsh, that insurance won't pay for these things. Is there any way to appeal that? With people's insurance they sometimes say no first, hoping you'll go away and not pursue it; and then when you call them on it, they say yes. But I'm sure you have your hands full just focusing on your dear boy and the vets. Prayers and hugs to all of you. :hope

Unfortnatley, the MRI and CT-scan I can't do nothing about. It is in the.. well what do you call it in english.. terms and conditions(?) of the insurance, and written black on white that the insurance do NOT cover for MRI and CT. So they have exkluded it for everyone, overall. They are not just refusing to pay me, they never pay for noone.

The terms and conditions says nothing about PET-scans though, so there MAYBE the vet can talk them into paying for that, but I'm not so sure =/

And, I just can't afford to pay the MRI och CT by myself, the cost for those are way over my budget, and I just don't have that kind of money availiable =/

To all - thank you for your prayers, and of course I will keep you update. Tomorrow I get the lab results, and if they are clear, we start him on metacam again.

Today has been a really bad day, he has mostly been lying down, not wanna play with his friend, and acted scared and listless outside in the dark. And som barking during the day, at 'ghost' (things/sounds/whatever only in his imagination)

Has a complete Tick Titer been done on this boy. Is it possible he has Lyme's Disease???

Yes, tested in september 2008 and then again now, February 12th (2009).

No titer.

We have only two tick born dieseases that affects dogs here, lyme disease (borrelios) and anaplasmosis. No titer for either. (Unfortnatley actually, if he had been positive, then we could have treated it)

I don't know how things work there, but do you think there's a chance that your vet will allow you to make payments for the tests?

I just have a hard time digesting the fact that this is needed for him and they'll let money stand in the way!!
