Guest tigger
It was 8 yrs ago when I adopted Diane from NGAP. During the greyhound walking weekends at their kennel leading up to her adoption…I remember reading the description on her crate which read…”Mn’s Saint Diane….quiet, sweet and affectionate”. Well, 2 out of 3 of those words held true…she was very sweet and very affectionate, but out of the kennel Diane’s verbal side was awakened! She LOVED to talk and did so in every various form from whimpering…to rooing…to nose whistling…to talking via cute warbling noises while rolling her head on her dogbed and pawing at her ear. Clearly, Diane’s purpose was to speak and be heard in an ever so delightful way Diane was warm, lovable, enthusiastic and very open and loving to all people and animals. She most notably used her wonderful personality in helping to bring lost greyhounds and doggies to safety. Upon seeing a lost dog…Diane would perk up her ears…smile real big and give a couple of inviting whimpers…once the eye contact was made…she had established their trust. The most profound thing Diane taught me was whatever it took…give a lost dog safe opportunities to be seen….to be found….to come to someone. It has to be on their terms and that is always determined by the dog and what he/she can handle. It was an invaluable lesson to watch her establish trust by giving a safe opportunity to trust…while being cautious to never do anything to be a threat to the lost dog. She brought home Moe…who was hiding in a grove of low overhanging trees at a very busy intersection. Others had just checked there and said to move on…Diane wanted to go in there and as soon as we walked up into the privacy of the branches and the rest of the world was obscured…she turned to the left and started whimpering. Out of nowhere emerged Moe…a black greyhound…with a big smile and a wagging tail who readily came right over to us to meet his newfound girlfriend Dottie was also a best friend of Diane’s. She had been lost for a couple of months in a rural area of PA. There were sightings by neighbors who were feeding Dottie...but no one could catch her because she was shy and very scared from being out so long. While setting up a trap…Dottie was spotted watching us. She of course ran away when we looked in her direction. I took Diane and we walked up to the next house a little ways up the road. We noticed the dog in the pen was barking very oddly at something. It turned out to be the spot. Dottie again ran from us…but we stayed put…and as we hoped she came around the other side of the trees to view us again. Diane started her whimpering and talking and Dottie became very curious. Eventually, Dottie made her way to us and Diane knowing Dottie’s concerns…kept herself in between me and Dottie as I tried to coax Dottie with food to keep her near and establish trust. Diane being very affectionate was an easy example to show Dottie that people could be trusted. Diane would kiss my face and talk and look at Dottie almost as if she were telling her I was okay…it was going to be okay. Eventually Dottie lay down near us and let me get near enough to slip a collar over her head and pick her up to take her to the car. Diane’s work was done…another new friend was found! Cecil the whippet was a friend of hers too. He had been lost for weeks. He ran extremely fast and quick from everyone…so fast you could barely see the little blur go by! We were lucky to get to a right spot and Diane saw him…did her thing…and Cecil ran right over to her and we were in the car and homeward bound! It is with great sorrow, that I share that Diane has now joined our friends at the rainbow bridge. She lost her battle to osteo on Sunday, December 28th. Our home is very quiet without our talkie Diane. We miss her tremendously…esp her buddy Rudy…they were best friends. Pictures below of my beautiful Diane…sweet dreams baby…you are forever my voice of encouragement and optimism…and you always made this world a hopeful and wonderful place to be in. Guest EaglesMom
Diane was a very unique, sweet vocal girl. She will be missed by all who had the joy of being around her. She was the hairiest greyhound I have ever seen with the cutest gait when she ran. I am sure she is continuing her good work with the lost souls at the bridge. You will forever be missed.
