Basia was a Whippet/Doberman mix who looked like a mini-Dobe with rose ears and hare feet. She was my first "bounce-back" foster dog, and my first foster failure. She was about 2 when I pulled her from the shelter, and had been diagnosed with Wobblers not long after that. Basia had had difficulty with walking for a while – her right front leg was about useless, and with her Wobblers, she needed assistance hopping up the stairs. But she wore a RuffWear harness so it was easy for me to help her, and she still wanted to be by my side at all times. Over the past few weeks she’s had more problems standing and maneuvering through the house. Even her acupuncture/chiropractic treatments didn’t seem to hold very long. She had deteriorated to the point where she just couldn’t get around, and would lay on a dog bed as the rest of the pack went about the business of being dogs. Her quality of life was gone, and I wanted to release her from the body that had finally failed her. Basia was my shadow, my pinhead, my little alert girl. The house seems eerily quiet without her announcing the doorbells on TV, or tattling on the other dogs, or just accompanying me to the bathroom. I miss you, girl. Thanks for being my companion for the past 8 years. Basia was a beautiful girl although in that second picture, she seems to be the definition of "deer in the headlights". I'm sorry she had to leave you.
