Moral of story: be a very good actor and actress and be happy when he moves, never mind gets up, even if it kills you. They really do need do "happy stuff", as some have mentioned. It's hard to do, but it's really necessary.

Your story really touched me.

They are so very sensitive to our feelings. Thank you so much for sharing that, smiling through your tears, and giving your fellow 4 more wonderful years :grouphug:grouphug

Ditto!!  :bighug

Good to see Alan in his outdoor bed!  Must be so nice for him; fresh air, birdies to watch, comfy in the shade ...  aaahhhh!!  I see you have one of those halters you can help lift him with.  Good one!  Give that boy a smile and a skritch from me ( and a little nuzzle from Wabi .. well, probably more like a sharp nudge and a bark to get him to ........

Sorry, Pogo and Wabi interrupted me with some spotty dog silliness!

..... play with her!!  :lol )

You know I replied without looking at the post on pg 13... They are sooo right. You need to hold parties every single time. Tigger was very depressed, and I would hold a party for just standing. He seemed to enjoy it. It was hard to do since I was fighting back tears, but it could only help him.

I was just thinking about Alan. I haven't seen you update in the other message board in a while. You are still in my prayers.

Thank you all for being so kind, keeping my boy in your thoughts and prayers!

Alan still has no use of his left hind leg :( he is managing to get around with it but it just gets in his way. I call it his "anchor" because when he loses his balance his hind end twists around to the left and bam, he falls with his left leg pulling him down acting like an anchor. He has a very bad wound on his hip bone/butt bone? from falling. He is very skinny and depressed but there are some things to be happy about:

1. His balance is getting good, he can poop and pee on his own without us standing over him to hold him up, altho sometimes his left foot gets in the way and he poops on it :(

2. He still feels deep pain in the leg.

3. I left him outside in the backyard today and when I went to check on him I found him digging in his favorite spot! He loves digging so this shows me that he is beginning to do the things he enjoyed doing before his injury.

Bad things:

1. if there is no movement in the paralyzed limb 2-3 weeks post injury chances are good that he will never regain use of the leg! We are now 2 weeks out...

2. he refuses to eat most of his food...only eats a couple of bites then turns his nose up at it. he can't afford to keep losing weight...he has lost about 15 pounds in 2 weeks and that's really bad!

3. He may have a urine/bladder infection...we have to get his urine tested asap.

4. he has not barked once since this happened and he is usually very alert and vocal, especially at strangers walking by the house and other animals.

5. Maggie misses her squirrel and bunny and bird chasing buddy :(

I took a few photos and a couple of videos yesterday

here is the picture of his wound from falling...I feel horrible because if you're not there to catch him he falls on it and opens it up again! My Mom and I are making a cushion we can strap to his hiney to protect this area (he's really gonna love me then)

Suzie, that looks GREAT!! I know you're really close and it's hard maybe to see it as progress, but he's getting around pretty darn well! That's a lot like what Wabi looks like. In fact, is he pegging along using the funky leg as a support? It kinda looks like that. Wabi does do that with her goofy leg. Sometimes it's her "kickstand", as someone here put it (who was that?? :blink )

The owey on his hip looks painful, though, no doubt! :( I can hardly wait to see the cushion you two come up with! That should be interesting! :lol

Continued thoughts and hugs from over here...

Suzie,

I honestly think Alan looks much better in these videos than he did in the first ones & the fact that you have a list of good things should feel very encouraging (digging :yay ). I can only imagine how hard it is to see him like this but hold on to those positives!

I hope the hydro-therapy helps his wound as well and that it will be a source of hope for all of you.

He really does look much better. I worry about his poor foot, though. He needs a boot to protect his toes? I think he looks more alert and confident. As for food, when someone here goes off food I give them kind from Natures Balance. It looks like a salami and is usually hanging on a display tree at the pet store. It is usually eaten right up! You need a good heavy knife to chop it up to bite size.

His balance is much better. I hope he starts to use the leg, or at least to enjoy food and other pleasures.

He has a boot on in the video...it might be hard to see it tho :unsure

He will eat the life saving meatballs that Brian makes for him and sometimes he eats his canned I/D. Good idea on the Natures Balance, might have to try it!

We are continuing to keep Alan in our prayers. :hope:hope He really does look like he is getting around well considering all he has been through.

Something you might want to look into...........we have used active manuka honey on wounds with great results and it might be something that would help the wound on his hip. The web address is Manuka Honey USA

Keep up the good work Alan........the greytfulhounds are cheering for you! :thumbs-up:grouphug

I think he's looking great too. He's learning to get around as a tripod, but the anchor is getting in his way. Have you tried to sling it up?
