  1. This vet has great reviews and is certified by AVCA and CHI Leanne Lipton DVM Washington DC 202-821-3893
  2. Nick: where do you live? Chiropractic and acupuncture will help Fresh Factors is very good for all the things you are mentioning also.
  3. Kibble: Solid Gold holistique Blendz is the lowest fat content made in a kibble that I have found (6%). Shadow did well on it for months. Canned is very low fat so you can choose most any brand/kind and mix it in. Treats: apple chips, pitted dates, rice cakes and Burpdog biscuits I've been keeping Huston's fat content down to 12% and lower and so far, he's doing well. There are many foods that are at 10% and 12% fat and are good kibbles: Organix weight management is 10%, Solid Gold Hundenflocken is 10%, Solid Gold Mmellenia is 12%, BilJac kibble reduced fat 10% Jodie was put on a homemade diet and did very well. I agree with Redhead, if it's not chronic, you can go back to a diet reasonable in fat. Some of the kibbles are way too high at 16%+ in fat.
  4. Are you sure your 11 mo old boy doesn't have either hook or whipworms? To be absolutely sure you need to take a sample every day for 3 days in a row. I would treat for worms at that age. Many greyhounds do not do well for bowel issues when put on pred
  5. Sending my sympathy All I could think of as I was reading was how much he was loved and how fortunate all of you are to have met and loved each other. What a character -- I'm sure he is having lots of fun in Rainbow Land!
  6. Not sure how far this vet is from you -- she is CHI certified. I'd give her a try. Delores Craig, DVM, CVA Specialty: Small Animal Tel: (575)526-1672 Las Cruces, NM 88001, USA
  7. re Echo I doubt she has diabetes. Sounds like the steroids. Can you cut the steroids? Why is she receiving them?
  8. I would have a vet look at it. Since I am in Houston and a specialist is not that expensive ($100-125 for the first visit), I'd go directly to the specialist. Don't know where you live. Some areas of the country have more affordable vet care than others.

    Eliza

I thought of Eliza a lot this past weekend. Finally figured out why -- another year gone. That time to remember and remind everyone to read the product inserts and if you aren't given one, demand one. I don't care what the drug is -- you should know what to look for as far as side effects. Wish I had been smarter back then Love your kids today for you know not what tomorrow brings.....
  10. From Dr. Couto's "Are Sighthouds Really Dogs?" http://www.coutovetconsultants.com/blog/are-sighthounds-really-dogs.html
  11. I would never leave food with an unsupervised dog. I think going from crating 2 hrs to 9 hrs in one day is too much to ask.
  12. I crush them for Huston. After 5 years he doesn't want to eat them but will in canned (yogurt lasted some weeks). He will not eat if they are just sprinkled on his food. If they don't like them, they won't eat anything with them on it. I think for Tony I put them in liver.
  13. I have had many of my seniors test 3+ to the point I questioned the test! We did a protein/creatine ratio on one and it was fine so we (vet & I) ignored the protein. They all lived to 14 + years old without any changes in diet.
  14. Hi Alex! Want to make sure you see our Texas gathering on Nov 6-9 in San Antonio! Hope to see you there http://forum.greytalk.com/index.php/topic/308345-remember-the-greyhound-san-antonio-tx/
  15. Try this vet and see how you like her: http://www.altvetcare.com/about-me
  16. Sending my sympathy & hugs What a greyt grey she is! Run like the wind silly girl
  17. I buy Fresh Factors which I think is still cheaper than Cosequine. Been using FF for 15 years and it does help.
  18. There are many good threads in this section for her to read: http://forum.greytalk.com/index.php/topic/305786-osteo-thread-part-8/ http://forum.greytalk.com/index.php/topic/169522-winslows-diary/page-33?hl=winslow&do=findComment&comment=4076842
  19. Full panel or just a free T4? I don't think that is his only problem. He sounds confused and so do you. Dr. Sophia Yin: I have not read her work but it comes highly recommended and some of things you are having problems with she addresses. I am very sad that recently she committed suicide http://drsophiayin.com/ I think pets can and do learn words but even so rely on our body language and the way we say things more so than what we say (for instance -- say we are going to take a bath in your happiest voice and they get happy)
  20. What a good friend he is Sending my sympathy to all who loves him
  21. Huston knows lots of words and I have to carry on a conversation with him to get to the appropriate place he wants me to be. Woof! Want a cookie? Ok -- have one. Woof! Well, ok, one more. Woof! No more cookies! Woof! WOOF! Listen, if you are that hungry, go lay down and I'll feed you. Depending on whether he is hungry or just asking for cookies, he may lay down Or, he may take a break and go outside. He lays down and I put something down and he sniffs it and looks at me with "the look". This is when we have to have the conversation to determine whether he will give in and eat what is there or he is disgusted by what I've given him and he figures out if he is hungry enough to argue. Arguing amounts to flopping down in disgust, then when the food is taken away, starting half woofs and escalating to full woofs and large woofs until I get it right.
