    Eliza

I knew it was time to come here again. How can it be SO hard after all this time? How can it still hurt so much. Everything is the same except the year: Do your research, read the product inserts, don't follow blindly on -- take some responsibility. Somehow making a choice even if it doesn't work out is better making it with knowledge than doing something in ignorance. For the new people: when starting a NSAID, do blood work then follow up in two weeks, then in four weeks. If the platelets, kidneys and liver are ok, you can spread out the blood work. Don't cheap out on this. Had we done it with Eliza we could have saved her. Wanted to edit this and say: my vet did per Pfizer's protocol. She died before the second blood test.
  2. Where do you live -- can you get frozen BilJac where you are? I haven't read the entire thread. Has he been checked for worms? Blood work done?
  3. Feed her anything she wants whenever she wants -- she's 14. Most seniors prefer to eat between 10 p.m. and 2 a.m.
  4. Just now seeing this: sending my deepest sympathy. Thank you for sharing him and his, and your, story. A special guy and a special bond.
  5. Please do not hold her muzzle -- a good way to get bitten. She should have NO couch or bed privileges for a very long time.
  6. Not sure. TBD tests sent to Protatek are back within 48 hrs (except for VF) and yes they are accurate.
  7. Wow At least he is holding his own. I thought they tranfused greyhounds when it dropped below 30%. Other breeds are different. You know I know what you are going through since this is what Eliza had (due to rimadyl) Sending many prayers.
  8. If a food causes gas, it doesn't live at my house My guys almost never have gas! btw -- try turkey or salmon
  9. Hi there! Very possible she is crashing due do to a tbd. Glad they are treating her
  10. I remember you -- sending hugs She was so young!
  11. The rule in my house is that if the food produces gas, it doesn't live there
  12. I have had an awful time with Dolly & Grace (finally got Taylor on kibble and he's been ok, Ringo same). I bought the Whole Earth Farms, turkey/duck and for the first time in weeks, Dolly has turds! Many soft ones, but at least turds. The last day or two not so good but I gave them TJ cookies and fed Dolly home made last night. This morning was very bad. I'll let you all know how it goes.
  13. Sending my sympathy and hugs. I hope you get another someone -- there are so many needing love, and you have it to give! Run like the wind sweet girl
  14. Where are you located in Houston -- north, south, east, west?
  15. Heartworm preventative in every state in the US now, should be given.
  16. Hi from Texas Once you put in the wood floor, you could use runners to help with traction or area rugs if they have problems on the floor. Since I adopt mostly seniors, slippery flooring is always a concern for me. The younger ones don't have as much trouble as a general rule (some don't like it at all). When you go to get chosen, see who chooses you -- don't worry about gender. I've had tons of males since greyhounds (only 3 males the 30 years before) and I've only had one or two lift their legs in the house and they learned quick. Most of the males would bust a gut before going in the house. Looking forward to see who you come home with!
  17. I'll ask my vet. I almost put Dottie down and it was the combination of those two. Once I stopped the MSM she was fine. Be careful with the GG's glucosamine because it is made from shark cartiledge. I have used Fresh Factors for close to 20 years and yes, there is a difference when the dogs are on it. One thing I like is that greyhounds tolerate it well. That is not true of all of the alternative meds for arthritis. Most of the dogs will eat them plain, but for the ones who won't I grind (they are very soft -- you can actually mush them with a spoon), or break them up and put them in their food. Springtime makes a powder with chondroitin (bovine), glucosamine (shellfish) and MSM if that is the way you want to go. Tramadol is good for pain management for a few days if needed. There is one herbal combination I keep on hand for short term pain management called ResinallE. That herb, Calm Spirit and Quiet Digestion are the 3 that work well and greyhounds tolerate well. Just remember, if you use a NSAID, they all have the same side effects, however, the death rate is less in some when a severe reaction occurs. Metacam oral has half the death rate as rimadyl, however, the same death rate when an injection is given. Also, keep in mind that seniors have reaction rates many times that of younger dogs, although young dogs have died. I babysat a grey once on previcox (had I know at the time it was a NSAID I would have been nuts) and when I saw the black stools I called the vet and the med was discontinued immediately. The first three blood tests I would do a blood test to start, another in no more than two weeks, then perhaps 6 weeks. Had I done that, Eliza would have lived. Several vets who were involved changed their protocols after Eliza died. While Eliza was fighting for her life, I remember the vet at Pfizer telling me "a dog with an underlying condition, should not be given rimadyl". Stop and ponder that.......
