  1. All of mine except Nadia have only gone swimming by accident in my friend Cathy's in ground pool - only once each. The most spectacular entry belongs to my AWOL girl Pinky, but that's a story for another time. None were especially delighted by the experience. What bouancy the hounds have is in those big lungs, so at best they float at a 45 degree angle
  2. Ouch! But I'm glad to hear Cody is recovering. I hope he's good as new very soon. If this is the first incident for the rottie and he has no history of aggression, I don't think he should be put down either. And the owner has certainly seemed to have stepped up.
  3. This may or may not help, but for what it's worth... Nadia is also on Enalapril and digoxin and is a picky eater (although she's only 8). She is a pciky eater, but it seems she prefers food with a stronger smell. Her current favorite is Pro Plan Selects salmon and brown rice (which the cat finds tempting, too).
  4. If you have a Pet Valu nearby, I think they carry Frontline. I think Petco does, as well.
  5. Do the tests vary? My vet has always said 6 to 8 hours.
  6. Nadia is on digoxin as well as Enalapril for dilated cardiomyopathy. She's also a picky eater and has shown the same lack of interest in food (although no vomiting) from time to time especially when she first started on the meds. For what it's worth, she seems to prefer kibble with a stronger smell. Pro Plan Selects salmon and brown rice is the current favorite (and she eats that with gusto). I looked back over Nadia's discharge instructions from when she was first diagnosed and put on digoxin (three years ago). They indicate to call if there was a change in appetite or vomiting. Nadia get blood tests every six months to determine and if necessary adjust her digoxin dosage. Hope this info helps.
  7. He's sure getting the best of care. I'll be thinking of you both.
  8. Glad to hear the steroids seemed to have eased his pain. I sure hope it's just a strain or sprain
  9. Glad he's doing so well... but he sure doesn't seem to be looking forward to his hydrotherapy session.
  10. That's a good idea to do the follow up blood work. The creatinine of 2.2 seems high even for a greyhound.
  11. From Dr. Stack's article: Creatinine Greyhounds: .8 - 1.6 Other dogs: .0 - 1.0 Greyhound creatinines run higher than other breeds as a function of their large lean muscle mass. A study at the Auburn University College of Veterinary Medicine found that 80% of retired greyhounds they sampled had creatinine values up to 1.6 times as high as the top of the standard reference range for "other dogs." As a lone finding, an "elevated creatinine" is not indicative of impending kidney failure. If the BUN and urinalysis are normal, so is the "elevated" creatinine. ...greyhound urinalysis is the same as other breeds. It is normal for males to have small to moderate amounts of bilirubin in the urine. I'm not a vet, so I won't try to diagmose. What does your vet suspect, if anything?
  12. By "a little high" did he mean by greyhound normals or for dogs in general? Here's a link to Dr. Stack's article on greyhound blood values
  13. A dog having soft poop or us talking about it
  14. Here's hoping it's something minor and Fritz will be just fine.
  15. Hope they get fix him up and he heals up very soon.
  16. Wish I could say the same. Only one of mine needed an e-collar. It terrified her and she could still reach to lick her wound.
  17. I'll second what's already been said... Take him for x-rays.
  18. I can only speak from personal experience, not as a dentist. Yes, people do in fact need super deep cleanings. People do develop periodontal disease and the associated deep pocketing (sometimes because of less than diligent dental hygeine, sometimes inspite of it). I've had deep scaling done and also periodontal surgery (which reduces pocket depth). Although I had local anesthesia some patients do get a more general anesthetic (ie gas). But somehow, I can't picture a dog having a deep cleaning with a shot of novacain.
  19. Nadia was on famotidine (active ingredient in Pepcid) for a short time when we were dealing with an appetite problem. In her case, the problem turned out to be between her ears, the little...
  20. Over here in Europe tubal ligation is done every now and then as well as vasectomy in males... By the way my hounds are intact and my female (now 8 years old) never attracted males from miles around. I walk her in heat the same as without heat and until now I had never any problems with male dogs following us. Probably should have qualified than with "can attract"
  21. Yep... if he's got breath that peels paint and makes your eyes water, sounds like he needs another dental. My toothless wonder puppy Kara needed a big time dental (29 teeth extracted) when I first got her as a foster. But six months later, despite routine care, she needed another dental and lost six more. By contrast, my other two have pretty good teeth. If he's uncooperative for brushing, a medicated chew like CET Hextra might work. They work well for Honey and Nadia.
  22. I think people may confuse their own cleaning with what their dog needs. I've had good success with CET Hextra chews to keep the tartar down, but when it's time for a cleaning, I want it to be thorough (which means anesthesia).
