Favorite Canned Food

Recommended Posts

It is time to switch Ruby onto a canned food for at least some of her meals. She continues to lose weight and just knows all the tricks I have to make her food more palatable. She is getting a dental Wednesday so I thought now would be a good time to try something else.

She is allergic to beef and that is the only one Costco has had the last few times I have been there. I would love one where I feed the whole can (she weighs 57 lbs) and that does not contain grains if possible. The thought of an open can in my fridge makes me shudder. I also do not want to touch it. I am the exact same way with raw meat too, not just dog food. She has been on the salmon Costco food, but doesn't like it too much. She prefers turkey and chicken it seems like.

Ideas ?

I buy the dog food organic chicken at BJ's. It is chicken, peas and carrots. Or, you can buy human canned chicken which would have nothing additional. I rinse the chicken when I use that, as it contains some salt.

Our dogs all like and do well on the BJ's brand (BerkleyJensen) organic chicken - kibble and cans. We've been feeding it for years. If you have a BJ's nearby, consider a membership. Our dogs never liked the Costco Kirkland brand dog foods, but I do keep a membership there for the dog beds.

When I feed canned I like to use Evanger's. Some of the varieties can be a little pricey, but overall I've been pretty happy with the quality of the food.

I use the Organic Canned Chicken when we need a bland diet instead of going through the hassle of boiling and shredding a chicken. Then I just add rice, pasta or whatever add-ins I'm feeding. Keeping it on hand has allowed me to start the bland food as soon as I need it rather than having to cook or thaw something first. Every once in a while, Wag or Amazon will have a pretty decent sale on the Evanger's products.

This is the one she tried last night and loved. I only have 3 more of this kind, so may need to go back and buy more. She did have a bit of a tummy issue this afternoon, but I doubt if it was the canned food from yesterday. She was eating grass and then hacked up a few blades of grass. She ate her regular kibble tonight that was soaked a bit and topped with parmesan.

Her dental is in the morning, so we shall see how things go.

Thanks everyone for your input !!!

Wishing Ruby a successful dental and rapid recovery.

She's probably not going to eat anything else tonight since they need an empty tummy for anesthesia.

One of our hounds had a horribly stinky diarrhea mess on the operating table after having eaten a rare, special dinner + treats the previous night. Thereafter, we promised our vet presurgery meals would be limited to their regular foods. :)
