Temp Of 103.5

Recommended Posts

When I got home from work today Ozzie had thrown up on the rug. I caught him eating poop this morning and it looked like that's what he threw up, along with a little bit of grass.

It's been very windy here and noisy all day, which has kept him from resting really well.

I fed him dinner and he ate with gusto, and took a small cookie, but ate it very slowly.

He's acted like he doesn't feel well, so I took his temp and it is 103.5. A little on the high side, but, IDK if this merits an e-vet visit if he is keeping his food down. I've always been a bit fuzzy on what constitutes a fever in a dog when 101 to 102something is an acceptable normal.

What do you think?

Found here:

Fever, referred to medically as pyrexia, can be defined as a higher than normal body temperature in dogs. With the normal range falling between 99.5-102.5 Fahrenheit, a body temperature of at least 103.5 ° F (39.7° C) can be considered a fever.

I don't think e-vet if other things look okay: he's not dehydrated, not panting, stuff like that.

Okay...thank you! He's just sleeping. I got him to drink some water right after I posted. He's not sleeping heavy yet but I've been moving around a lot getting ready for bed myself, and it's his job to keep an eye on me ;)

I hate that "fine line" where it wouldn't be completely nuts to take them in, but, then there's not a ton that the vet would do if you DID take them in.

I'll keep an eye on him. My mommy sleep pattern will kick in tonight and I'll wake up every time he stirs. :lol

The site where I found that quote (I couldn't believe Ozzie hit the number right on the nose) didn't make it sound like "rush to the ER" stuff.

But I'd have my purse handy, make sure I know where my keys are, and stuff like that, so I could move fast if I needed to.

Tigger (formerly Clem, formerly Flying Clemenza) had a night of vomiting not long after I adopted him. The only things he'd had to eat were a bit of cheese (on an empty stomach) and his regular kibble. He threw up several times that night, then again in the morning. The vet (not ER) did x-rays and saw signs of an upset stomach (no kidding), but no torsion or anything scary like that. My best guess is that the boy is just lactose intolerant. I haven't given him any cheese since then, and there's been no repetition of the event.

But he needed a shot of Cerenia to calm down his stomach--and he screamed and screamed. Turned around, stared right at the techs, and screamed at them. He was hurt and outraged. I took him back to the vet's this weekend so they could give him cookies. I don't want him scared to go in there.

P.S. Check the color of Ozzie's gums.

Gums nice and normal...good pink color :)

Thank you for being an ear for this momma...after losing so many in the last year, I start to feel panicky when someone isn't feeling well :(

I'm following this thread, so every time you post, I'll get a message. And I'm planning to be up and awake for another 3 hours or so. Here's hoping he just sleeps--and you too.

Chiming in too :-). With a temp of 103.5 at home I would be concerned also. I don't think it's a e-vet worthy trip but, I would monitor his temp. One thing you might want to consider is a Lyme check. Lyme symptoms can vary amongst individuals but, lethargy, lack of appetite, lameness and fever are some. Your vet should be able to run a in house snap test. Hope he feel better by morning :-)

Do you know Ozzie's normal temp? I ask because my bridge-girl Paige always ran 'hot' (102+ was her resting), and Riley can elevate his temperature by panting hard (which he does during carrides in addition to stressful situations like vet visits). I like watching the gums (which sound like Ozzie's are normal) because those seem harder to change.

If Ozzie's temp is still a bit elevated, you might consider having a cool coat handy ...

Hope Ozzie stops scaring you soon!!!

How's Ozzie?

When Noah had been my foster for a few days, he started acting weird one night. Luckily I'm friends with a vet in another state AND friends with a girl from our group who is a vet tech...I was ready to carry him to the car and get to MSU. Both thought he was nauseous...I started giving him the metrodiazinole (sp?) per the vet's suggestions and withheld food in the morning and he came out of it well. He was so mad at me because I opened his mouth and stuck my finger partially down his throat to look for obstructions. Noah was walking around with his head lowered and tail tucked and couldn't get comfy...I was scared he would be my first case of bloat. I sat by him for a couple of hours, but he was mad at me so he kept hiding his nose and not looking at me...so I went in to my room where I could watch him and kept vigil for a few hours before I crashed...but if any dog moved I was up right away.

One thing the vet tech told me to keep on hand is Zantac 75 and that I could give him one in AM and one in PM...she did the same for her pup after he had bloat to help with his upset tummy.

He does have Giardia, which he and the girls are getting their second round of treatment for right now...and then a stool sample will go to the vet for analysis. Noah started to have belly/butt gurgles the other night and was off his food, so I started giving him the Zantac and he is now eating like a champ again. I'm going to keep him on the Zantac through this week while he is getting the treatment (using goat dewormer as it has the same medicine as Panacur in it, but it is more cost effective especially when dosing 3 dogs).

He slept all night - his temp went up a little more around 2am, but, he was still sleeping comfortably. I put a cool towel on him and that helped. We slept from 2-6. His temp this morning was 102.8. But he's still feeling punky. I didn't feed him breakfast but did offer him a cookie, which he took, but not with his usual gusto. He did not poop last night or this morning in spite of having eaten his dinner. He did pee A LOT last night. I believe he was drinking more to try to counter his temperature.

I wrestled with what to do this morning as I had physical therapy at 7:40am. I ended up going and my mom stopped in to see him just about half an hour ago. He did poop for her - not diarrhea either, good poop. But, he normally goes BALLISTIC when she visits and today he just met her at the gate - no jumping, no tail wagging. He's definitely not himself.

We have an appointment with our vet at 1 - she doesn't come in until noon and I felt that he'd be okay until then. I'd rather see her than one of the other vets at the practice. Something is definitely off - just not sure what. Could just be a bug. But I'd rather see our vet than take him to the ER too, so I feel it's best to just have her check him out. Poor punk :(

I'm a little bit worried because now that I'm thinking about it more...there were a couple of times last week in the evenings when there was just something a TINY bit "off" about him. Like he was feeling a little under the weather. But we'd go to bed and he'd wake up his springy bouncy self. He has always eaten his meals and his poop has looked fine. But I'm wondering now if that's when he started coming down with whatever this is.

I'm worried because this is what Ace acted like when she was diagnosed with leukemia :unsure

Try not to panic too much, Kristin. I'd have his blood run and if you haven't had a recent TBD test, do one. Hope he's back on the mend quickly.

TBD tests were negative :) Urinalysis was fine but a little dilute - he's been drinking more water trying to battle his temperature. His temp at the vet was a little high for him (usually when we are there he is around 101.3 and today he was at 102 - not a BIG difference but he still felt warm to me). CBC showed just SLIGHTLY elevated white count - everything else looked fine on his chem panel, lipase was totally normal.

Physical exam told us the story - he had some really nasty smegma crud and she looked at it on a slide and said HOLY BACTERIA. When she had done a rectal exam, he jumped a little bit - his urethra is inflamed. Poor buddy. They flushed everything out. Makes me wonder how long that has been festering in there. He's not been doing any intense licking, in fact I very rarely see him grooming his boy parts at all :dunno (which, I suppose, might actually be the CAUSE of this).

So, he's fine, relatively speaking. He's on Zeniquin, recheck in 2 weeks. He's snoozing on the couch. I came back to the office for a while because I am SWAMPED with work.

I'm SO thankful that he doesn't have leukemia - although, if he did, we'd know how to handle it. We just have to keep rolling with the punches.

Thank you everyone :)

I know now to keep an eye on those things just like I do for my little guys - they both need to have things cleaned really well from time to time. Ah, the joy of boys :lol
