Guest k9soul
"Don't touch when lying down" (Rudy) is transforming into a different dog. I started allowing him up on the bed on an invitation only basis at times, and he still prefers his sofa overnight to sleep in, but this morning he came in and whined and pawed at the bed. I told him it was okay and he jumped up and laid near me. Even as far as he has come, I've still been cautious in just reaching out and touching him when he is lying down because I don't want him to associate a hand coming over with something that is startling or intrusive. But I did lay my hand near him, and he moved up and started licking my hand. I touched his chin a bit and told him he's a good boy, then moved my hand back up to my body. He gave me a look, scooched his body over so it was up against mine, and shoved his nose under my hand. I don't think there's a clearer message than that? So we spent time cuddling and petting. I would never have imagined that even just a few months ago. Even after reading all the success stories, I thought "well Rudy is different, it's just something he doesn't like." Well, after 1 year and nearly 4 months, he's proved me wrong. If you build up enough loving trust and don't push, it can happen. He's even reached the point he will cuddle up close to Raven (my lab mix) on the couch. I caught them like this last night (Raven hard to see due to the black comforter camo!) Acadianarose
Oh Rudy! Way to go, handsome. Payton is getting much better, but he still doesn't feel comfortable on the furniture. He will let you pet him if he is lying down and will nudge you if you stop petting him. Great job on being so patient with him and not giving up. Guest k9soul
Thanks everyone, I'm really so thrilled. It is that much more meaningful when you watch that trust slowly bloom. He is just really a different dog than when he first came home. I went through a lot of questioning myself and sometimes discouragement, but we have grown together so much. I love him like crazy and I feel like it is mutual
