With Ruby's recent gas episodes I have been wondering about giving her probiotics. I know nothing about them for dogs and when researching online, find a lot of the talk about them seems to come from the sellers of the products.

I have used yogurt with probiotics lately to see if that will help her gas but no luck.

Anyone use one for gas issues and it helps ? What brand ?

Yogurt contains human probiotics, i.e. bacteria found in the human digestive tract. In general you'll have better luck with a canine probiotic that contains bacteria specific to the dog's digestive system. There are probably lots on the market. I only use the veterinary ones because I want to see the clinical trials behind it and the proof that the bacteria are still alive when you open the package. So far the only one I've been happy with has been FortiFlora. I keep a box on hand and will use it if someone has diarrhea, like Kili did yesterday.

I use probiotics for my kids..great stuff! Its called Vetri-Mega Probiotics...I buy it on amazon and just put 1 pill in their dinner at night. you can break it open too if you need to stir it around in their food. Between the food I feed them (Big Dog Natural), which has fermented veggies in it (probiotics) and the probiotic pills...my greyhounds dont have gas...I know! unheard of hehehe

I go to the US to purchase a probiotic from TSC that has the same ingredient as Fortiflora, it's a lot less expensive though. I can't find it in TSC stores here though, just in the US.

I use human products that I get online from Swanson Vitamins. Harry gets their Digestive Enzymes & the Dr Stephen Langers Ultimate 15 Strain Probiotic. I have also given him Kefir (found in grocery stores near the yogurt) sometimes and he loves it. He's never had a problem w/ gas but he can be prone to loose stools. Forti Flora didn't help his issues at all, but every dog is different. The only dog product I've used was Naturvet Digestive Enzyme w/Pre & Probiotics Powder - it worked well also

have you considered talking to your vet? we dealt w/ a similar situation....diagnosed as giardia-tylan powder and panacur fixed it. another thing to consider is the amount of food your dog is eating, try reducing it. that often solves the problem. the reduction can be as little as 1/4c per meal.

My senior girl, Molly, is currently experiencing diarrhea as she's trying to recover from pancreatitis the past 2 weeks--poor girl. Unfortunately she will have to undergo an abdominal ultrasound in 2 weeks (the earliest available appt at Carolina Veterinary Specialists!) since she's not recovering as quickly as she should be. Her local vet put her back on a prescription probiotic made by Iams called "Prostora" which has really helped Molly previously. However, it is very pricey: $2.25 per chewable tablet for a 15 tablet pack. Molly's best results on this occur when she's given one of these twice a day, so a 15-pack doesn't last long! I'd like to keep her on it regularly, daily, but want to find a more economical, similar product. The live & active culture in Prostora is "Bifidalis." Molly has the typical Grey chronic gingivitis & bad teeth/mouth issues, but when she's taking Prostora, it apparently changes her whole mouth chemistry in a good way: no foul mouth odor, significantly reduced (almost eliminated!) bleeding gums when I brush her teeth & if I brush her teeth every other day rather than daily, it's not the usual problems! That's amazing for Molly's mouth as she has a couple areas of chronic stomatitis (demonstrates how serious her gum/teeth/mouth issues are).

Lucky uses Jarrow Pet dophillus but she also gets Kefir every morning (its quite lactose free even though its made with milk!) In the beginning I was giving her some of my acidophillus bu was told thats probably not the greatest thing for her.

This is funny because when first adopting both my pups, I was having the usual trouble regulating their stools, etc. Put them both on Fortiflora, respectively. After awhile I had to admit I did not see any improvement/change, especially after not giving it to them for a brief testing period. So no more Fortiflora. Did have 1 box left though.

Flash forward a couple years later (mayber a year with our newest) and I noticed Chance, our big "gentle Ben" started burping significantly more during the days. No food change--he's on IAMs green bag). He also seemed to have even WORSE breath than when we first brought him home (smelled like a sewer!). I read a bit, especially here, that some of the bad breath can originate from the gut, so I started thinking of the probiotic again. Well, he's been getting a packet every day now for a month and his burping is mostly gone and his breath, while still not minty fresh, is not as "sewer-ish." So, I'll take it!

Sadly, both dogs continue to have some gassy evenings. Provides a lot of sarcastic material and laughter at our house. Usually when watching an evening show is when the bombs go off. They do seem happpy and healthy though. Sweet things. :)

I use Nature's Bounty Pro-biotics-Acidopholis. Our vet recommends using a probiotic daily. I find the pill easier than the yogurt as Fuzzy has some dairy issues.
