We had him testing on Monday, tested positive, started him on Amoxicilin 500mg, 2x/day w/food. He was getting better, but tonight he peed in the apartment twice and now has started dripping--i.e. we take him out, he pees, he comes in and is still dripping urine seemingly uncontrollably. Any suggestions for getting through the night w/out pee all over the apartment or in his crate? Will call the vet first thing AM, but evets here aren't that good and it doesn't seem like an emergency. Maybe TMI, but when I start getting a UTI, I drink baking soda in warm water. A smallish towel (hand-towel or kitchen-towel size), wrapped strategically and safety-pinned at his spine. You can fold a wash cloth into the right location on the towel for extra absorbency, if needed. I don't know about drinking baking soda. But you want him to drink as much as he can hold, even though that's extra trips outside. And you want lots of trips outside to flush out his system.(The shirt version of the belly band is fine, too. I've dealt w/UTIs in two other male dogs and both have improved right away after starting the antibiotic, is it normal for them to improve then regress this much? I'm annoyed with her and DH for not culturing in the first place, but I couldn't take him when he first went in. His belly band and crate were dry this morning and I just called DH, he seems to be doing just fine today and is staying dry, so hopefully last night was an a one off. As for the baking soda, I don't remember where I read it and I can't imagine getting a dog to drink it, but I've found it helps a lot , even if it does taste disgusting. Might need a culture. ditto, and try a belly band out of 2 diapers. staple them together, have the most absorbent part under his penis and then either duct tape or staple and duct tape the band in place. my scottie wore his diaper cummerbund for a really long time. if you are lucky and it doesn't shift the top half of the cummerbund can be reused. i bought the cheapest generic diapers, they worked like a charm. I called the vet and they said they can't culture because he's on an antibiotic--so why didn't you culture in the first place!. Waiting to hear back from the actual vet, I guess we'll just switch antibiotic and hope for the best? All of his bloodwork (run because he's got an upcoming dental) came back fine. Just, you run the risk that not enough will grow on the culture plate to identify it, and a culture isn't cheap. In your case, dunno.... If he's still having that much of a problem, you might indeed get a good culture. Baytril would probably be a good choice to try instead. cleptogrey Posted January 18, 2014 Share Posted January 18, 2014 I'd either try baytril or clavamox asap a friend whose grey had non-stop reoccurring uti s finally found a vet who said, baytril. this was after numerous cultures and just about every antibiotic in the book was used at another vet. it's a sure shot- many times. also, my late father was cultured while on antibiotics. they found out which antibiotic cocktail would kill his reoccurring uti before the uti would kill him(he was 94 and it was affecting his kidneys). She prescribed sulfamethoxazole and trimethoprim together. (smz tmp tabs) which she said were a broad spectrum (unfortuanately she called before I saw the baytril recommendation). We started him on them tonight, hoping for a good outcome for our boy. Also, how common are UTI's in boys? Patrick never had one and it was my impression boys didn't get them much, but then Murphy, Henry, and Leo had one (admittedly several months apart each). DH asked her if it could be something in our water or their food. She said definitly not, she would be seeing crystals in the urine, which were not there. I miss my old vet a lot. It might be more of a pick up time issue. When I worked at Antech we were open on Saturday well in to the evening and the Indy lab overnight. But the couriers only ran until 1pm because that's when the clinics closed. Anything after that had to wait until Monday pickup time, which depending on the clinic location could be afternoon or evening. Weekdays our stuff had to be to Indy by 1am so the couriers were back in the lab by 7pm. Again no problem for the city clinics but anything outlying (we had all of northern Indiana) were out of luck until the next day's scheduled stop. Culture needs to be set up within a certain hours after collection or the goodies will die. They need warm and dark to thrive. I have been taking it every day for nearly two years because I am immune compromised... I take it to prevent recurring lung and kidney infections; so it might do the job; it's good stuff. Guest equinegirl Posted February 18, 2014 Share Posted February 18, 2014 My grey goes through periods of 3-5 days when he has what we call his "peeing" issues. He will go outside and pee for 30 minutes at a minimum. It isn't a constant stream, he just stands thre and pee trickles out. We've gone through a lot of testing and the vet has ruled out UTI, kidney stones, blockages and basically told me that there is nothing "physically" wrong with him. It seems to happen when there are any changes in the routine. I've put him on antibotics for a trial and that seemed to help but since there is nothing medically wrong with him I do not want to keep him on a medication he doesn't need. We've determined Leo's urinating in the house is a stress reaction--in the short term we're going with some medication for anxiety (still haven't decided which one), will continue ongoing training, and in our case, moving him to a less stressful environment which I hope will help a lot.
