Fernando Is In The Hospital

Recommended Posts

Fernando is in the hospital. He will have surgery today to close a wound he received last night. He was doing his nightly zoomies and ran into something and ripped his skin. I checked the yard this morning and found some black hair on a door that had blown off the storage building. We've had a lot of wind the last few days. I've got to be more careful with my backyard. The vet said he should be fine. She sees this all the time with greyhounds.

Poor Fernando! He should be fine, but here's a hug for both of you. :grouphug

I have to rush off to take one of mine for an ultrasound. But when I come back, I'll tell you about the time I found that greyhound skin can be torn by a small leaf bud on a tree branch!

Good thoughts for Fernando. That does look bad but he should heal up soon.

That tissue-paper-thin skin! Heal quickly, Don Fernando.

One of Nutmeg's ears doesn't have any fur on it, courtesy of some backyard romp of hers that tore the top layer of skin off the ear. She came back inside without a care in the world, spattering blood all over the house.

Fernando came home yesterday afternoon with a lot of stitches, a drain tube and a lamp shade. And I am $400 poorer (so far). The vet told me to keep him quiet, no running for 2 weeks. Oh really? This morning at 4 AM he wanted to go out. The first thing we saw when I opened the door was a rabbit in the middle of the yard. So much for no running. I thought he was going to tear the stitches out. I guess I'll have to leash him in the yard now. By the way, he hates the lamp shade.

With the wound in that location, a t-shirt would work really well to keep him away from it. Might not need the e-collar or the muzzle. And yes, definitely keep him leashed for trips outside to keep him from running.

Izzy managed to get a gash last week and some staples. She came home with the cone of shame, but I just put a pair of pj's on her and it has worked great to keep her off the wound.

Poor Fernando! He looks handsome in that cone, though!

One of my girl's had staples in the same area. (no drain needed though) We skipped the lamp shade because she seemed to be leaving it alone. Well instead of licking, she managed to scratch it with a hind foot... while I was looking for a t-shirt. Oy! So back to vet's, swapped the snagged staples for stitches & our little girly got to wear a t-shirt the rest of the time. It worked beautifully well for her. And certainly a cone won't protect drain & stitches from a scratching hind paw.

Good luck.

What Jennifer said . I took a clean T Shirt and cut it so that it covered the Wound . No Problem . Give Fernando some big Hugs .

I caught Nando scratching at it so I dispensed with the cone (Much to Nando's relief!) And he is now wearing one of my old T shirts. He still wants to run. When I put the leash on him in the back yard he starts pulling and bucking trying to run. I don't know what's worse for his wound, the pulling and bucking or running free?

Just like my little stinker... :shakefinger

He'll probably adjust soon. If you think not then could you set up a smaller potty area for him? Do you have some xpens? I've done that before.

Glad everything is healing well. Sounds like he'll be running and playing again soon.
