krissn333
Skimmie has always had a little ratty bald tail...but in the last couple of weeks it has seemed red at the end. I figured he was wagging in his crate and just beat it up a little. I put a foam curler on it for a few days and that seemed to help with the redness, etc. The other day it seemed as though the bottom 1/2" was swollen, and it was a little crooked, like he bent it. He was touchy about me messing with it when I could get him to hold still long enough to grab it for a second. Last night, I saw him trying to lick the tip and noticed it was very dark we already had an appointment for this afternoon, so, we saw Dr. Bahns today. I already knew that it was dead. She scheduled us with the awesome surgeon that did Pinky's amputation for tomorrow morning. Poor Beans is going to lose a couple inches of his tail So if you could keep him in your thoughts tomorrow, I'd appreciate it. He will probably have to wear a tiny cone of shame as I don't have a basket muzzle for him like I do for the greyhounds. Guest gurehaundo
I'll be thinking about little Skimmie today. Please let us know how his surgery went. If my IGs ever have any injuries - Tovi gets hotspots sometimes - I use the Bite Not Collar. It works really well!
krissn333
Do they sell those at Petco or Petsmart? If so I'll pick one up before I go to get him tonight. Would be better than the cone of shame! 4My2Greys
You could try making the folded towel version of the Bite-Not collar. Of course in Skimmie's case you would probably need to use a hand towel.

juliemac
just saw this ... hope that all went well today, and gentle hugs for Skimmie!!! Meanwhile, my little boy had a partial amputation and my good friend's little girlie just had one a month ago ... no cone of shame for either of them. Instead, the tip of the tail was bandaged (if you have to change it, you'll need STRONG tape ... get the vet to provide some). For my boy Riley, we used a syringe tube to protect it from getting knocked about when he greets me, but I don't think that was used by my friend's vet. Good luck!!! VinnieAndRexsMom
They can lick through a basket muzzle. I had to tape Jake's. If you can't find a tiny bite-not, could you use a wash cloth or a small hand towel and make one like we do for the big boys? I use a towel and duct tape. Works great, but I don't leave them alone while they are wearing them. Hope all goes well with the tail amp. Quote Tonya, mom to May, and my angels Vinnie, Rex, Red, Chase, and Jake. krissn333
I usually use a taped muzzle for the big dogs here too. I'm most worried about him getting at it when I'm not home as it heals, so that's mainly why I need a bite not collar or a cone of shame-he WILL get after it, that's just how he is. It's bandaged really well right now and we go for a bandage change Monday morning. I have Elastikon tale here as well as an arsenal of bandage supplies. Ace had her tail amputated in 2007 after a freakish accident, but, I had the taped basket muzzle for her. I've dealt with tons of tail injuries via volunteering at our group's kennel and helping with medical stuff, and tails are just such a precarious situation! The fine line between keeping it bandaged and letting it breathe later is a tough one to walk. I am hoping this goes smoothly for my little buddy! Thanks all for your good thoughts and advice! krissn333
I had to do some work in my home office, so I brought Skimmie in here with me to get away from the other dogs and so I can keep an eye on him.
