Osteo Or Pin Removal

Guest kar

Scotch either has osteo or needs his pins removed. Xrays on monday. Can't believe I am going through this with another dog. Leg is all swollen where pins are. vet does not know if pin removal is needed or it is osteo. wish they had done xrays when i brought him 2 weeks ago. he has no limp though. do they usually limp with osteo. or they they limp when they need pin removal?

Do the dogs limp when they need the pins removed? Scotch is not limping - it is swollen and red and raw from him licking at it. I have tried bandaging it and putting a sock on it. that has helped a little. could not use a collar - he stood in the same place for 45 min when i put it on ande it took 45 min for me to get it on. I am concerned it is osteo - why my vet always waits to xray I don't know.

Do the dogs limp when they need the pins removed?

Can only answer that question anecdotally. My mother broke her ankle & had surgery involving lots of hardware. Years later she noticed a lump on her ankle. Turns out it was the head of a pin or screw. Can't remember which. It slowly began sticking out more & more until it was in danger or going through her skin & was starting to become uncomfortable if her ankle was resting against something. She never limped & said it didn't hurt. She did end up having to have the hardware removed.

The removal surgery was dramatically shorter than her original surgery, recovery time much faster. She had to take it easy for a little while so as to not stress the area until bone had started to fill in the spots where the hardware had been. Never had another problem.

Hopefully it is just hardware. If so, I hope it goes as smoothly as my Mom's.

I don't feel the head of a pin or anything. I just am hoping it is not osteo. I know that many people on the forum have lost greys to osteo. But the thought of loosing another of mine is just making me sick. I don't know if it is just my luck or what but I lost one at 9 months to heart disease, one at five to a rare bone sheath cancer and now soctch has this and my female has PLN. I just can't bear the thought of loosing either one of them. But I also don't think I can get another, because they are just so unique of a dog that I would be afraid that something else would happen. THe thought of lliving my life without having a greyhound is really upsetting.

But if the body is starting to sort of revolt against the hardware then that could result in inflammation. Like you though, I would have wanted the xrays sooner. That is something that comes from having Greys, I think.

It hurts like hell to lose them and it can be overwhelming when the loses come close together. I once lost 3 in 8 months. Those were all various mutts or rescues, none Greys. It happens to everyone who shares their lives with multiple dogs. I always wonder why we open ourselves up to this sort of pain. Then I get another dog & remember all over again why we do it.

It's just a pin starting walkabout... it's just a pin starting walkabout... it's just a pin starting walkabout...

I did have a grey who had elbow surgery and had pins inserted bc his elbow was basically crushed in a running accident. He formed a fistula where the pin actually poked out. This didn't bother him at first, however, A few years later we had to have the pins removed due to irratation. Swelling occured and then he actually had a fever. It was not a big deal to remove the pins.

However, unfortunately a year later he developed osteo close to the original site of pin insertion. Who knows if this was related or not but it's highly probable.

I know how you feel about losing your greys. However, just remember what they've given you! I too at times, think I can't do this again, but I do. And I'm so grateful I always continue to take the chance. They bless me so much no matter how long their time with me is.

Good luck!

I will not be able to do it again. I just look at every one else who does not have one problem with their dogs. With me it is just one thing after another. I have not had one out of four that were truly healthy

I am sorry you are going through this and dearly hope it's just the pins. I am glad you are getting the x-ray done on Monday as it should help determine the problem. As for limping and Osteo, yes, this is a common symptom due to the pain however some pups don't limp and then suffer a fracture which is the first sign of Osteo. It's very hard to confirm either way without x-ray and I would ensure they are digital (most are these days) and can be sent to OSU if heaven forbid it's something bone related as you will want a second opinion. Our thoughts are with you during this difficult time and I hope the diagnosis isn't too bad as you have been through a lot.

My last dog had a bone surgery which required a plate and screws. Almost exactly a year after the surgery, he almost died from the bone infection that had been festering for who knows how long.

I kept complaining that something was wrong, and eventually the surgeon said my dog was just a wimp-- Too bad he didn't take my concerns more seriously. I looked at him that day, and I KNEW something was wrong, and when I touched him he screamed and was burning up. Raced him to my NEW vet where they put him on IV antibiotics and kept him for several days. He had to have his hardware removed; one of the screws had to be drilled out because it had snapped. He needed two different antibiotics for two months--it was awful!

What i don't like is that scotch has no pain and it has been at least five years since his surgery. The leg just looks horrible and i am so mad that my vet waited so long to do xrays. I bring my dogs at the first instance of anything being wrong and I had to ask for the xray. And this was 1 week later.

Pin/hardware rejection is fairly common. Our group has taken in a number of broken leg dogs who had surgical repairs for their fractures. I can think of probably 4 of those dogs who later had to have their hardware removed. At least one of those dogs had the hardware backing out through the skin (of course, this happened the week after she was adopted  ). So yeah, that could certainly be the case, and I hope it is with your pup. That being said, if the hardware does have to come out, you essentially have a dog with a hole in its bone, so you need to treat it as a broken bone and be very careful until the bone fills back in.

Good luck today with your x-ray. Hope you get good news :)

Why is your vet waiting to x-ray? I'd either insist on imaging NOW, or I'd go to another vet who won't wait. It's your money, why won't the vet take it?

Like others have said, there's still a good chance this is a hardware rejection. It doesn't always happen immediately or close after the surgery. Hoping you get some answers today and that the hardware is the issue. :goodluck

Took scotch to specialist today. He is in surgery now for pin removal. She said there was some pus in the raw area. Said she saw no sign that would indioate to her that any osteo was present YAH :colgate He might have to stay overnight. 2,600 for surgery but he is my love. no new car for a while, oh well. Now I'm hoping surgery goes well.

I wonder also. had to pay 1600 up front. goodbye new car. Should have gotten pet insurance in the beginning I guess. Should have been a vet. Was going to but then met my ex - what a mistake.
