There is nothing that prepares you for having to say good bye. Whether it's the first or the fifth or ninth time. Whether they've been with you for years or just a few months. It doesn't matter if it's in the midst of an emergency or their body fails them and they just can't do anymore. Saying good bye is the hardest thing all of us have or will have to do. It just sucks.

Kirston had a racing career and then a career as a brood. She has 32 registerd pups and some of them have been quite good racers! I bet she loved being a mama, watching her with Harriet who still acts as if she's a puppy has been a treat. She'd stamp her feet and bark, yep, she had a voice and she knew how to use it. She'd run circles around Harriet, barking her head off then take off running. Never would have guessed she was 11 yrs old. She looked and acted like she was 5. Kirston, Butter and Harriet had this little thing going where they would burst through the door, 3 a breast, leaning on each other like packed sardines while racing to see who would get to the top of the slope first. Everyday at every turnout the *race* was on, didn't matter if it was rain, sleet or snow. Kirston was only with us for 10 months but in that time I can't recall her once growling at the others. She was such a sweet girl!

Kirston loved people, I bet she never met a stranger. Everyone who met her fell in love with her too. :love2 She had charisma and knew how to use her snaggle tooth look to get what she wanted. She'd poke you with her nose to get your attention , Bump bump bump..just letting you know she was there. "Hey you, I'm down here." She stayed under foot constantly. She'd lay on the floor under my feet before she'd lay on a dog bed. I had started playing a little game with her where I'd go in the living room and *recline* my chair then go about whatever needed to get done so later I could prop my legs up. She was a no nonsense kind of girl, she didn't care about frills, she just enjoyed being with her people. People that loved her very much.

Friday night Kirston was panting and wouldn't settle down, her belly looked swollen, so off to the vet. A LARGE mass on her spleen was bleeding, she was full of cancer. We had to let her go. I've lost my shadow………

Godspeed Sweetheart, we love you and will never forget you. :f_pink

I'm so sorry for your loss. She was a gorgeous girl! I lost my heart dog to the same cancer in May 2010 so I fully understand the surprise, shock and horror.

PS That snaggletooth is just the cutest thing ever!

I am so sorry for the loss of your most precious girl.

I do hate cancer. It is the thief who robs us, everyday, of those we love.

I'm so very sorry. :cry1 There is nothing like a playful senior broodie, and nothing harder than having to say goodbye to one. I'm glad she was able to spend her much-too-short retirement with you. I wish she could have stayed longer.

Godspeed Kirston.
