Our Sweet Mickey

Our sweet crazy girl came to us in South Carolina in November 2005. She bounded into our lives like she had always been there, and changed them forever. She moved with us to Alabama and loved visiting the adoption kennel at the track. She became a great spokesdog for greyhound adoption, as she never met a stranger. She brought joy and happiness to everyone she met. Her favorite were captive toddlers in strollers, an easy kissing target for sure. Her outgoing and easy attitude helped us rehab other troubled dogs. She was able to show it was OK to relax and accept some love, and to have some fun.

She moved with us again to our Canadian beach town last fall, and we were so looking forward to taking her for long walks on the lake this summer. Unfortunately, cancer prevented that. The last two months have been difficult. She had ongoing tummy issues and was uncomfortable. In the past two days she crashed completely and was clearly suffering. The spark in her eyes was gone, she was tired of feeling sick.

She passed to the bridge in our arms. In the few seconds before she drew her last breath her eyes sparked up. Pain free. She was as beautiful in death as she was in life, and she got a bit of peace before she passed on.

Due to work, Mickey was my only companion for many months on end on multiple occasions. She kept me company when I was lonely, and always cheered me up when I was down. This is the hardest thing I have ever had to do.

I wonder if we did enough. I wonder if we could have caught this earlier. I wonder if she knows how much she was loved. She will be forever in our hearts.

I love you Mickey, and loosing you has completely crushed me. My heart is broken, and I don't understand why we had to loose you so soon.

Please don't question any of your decisions and whether she knew how much she was loved. I'm confident that she did.

Truly, there is nothing you can do about a cancer like that except precisely what you did: Love your dog every minute of every day, and then love her enough to let her go.

My heart goes out to you. It is not fair to lose a girl just at the prime of her life.

Godspeed, incredible girl.
