Guest izzysbuddy
On Monday night Izzy started whining during the middle of the night, just once. On Tuesday night he whined constantly and panted non-stop. Wednesday morning we took him to the vet. She did minor blood work and suspected Lyme disease although the snap test came back negative. She prescribed Deramaxx for the pain and Doxy for the Lyme. Wednesday night was a dream, he slept most of the night. Thursday night he slept a little better, but still panted. Last night Friday, he didn't sleep much at all and we're going back to the vet this morning. Since Thursday night he has lost some coordination, been extremely listless. We also found urine spot in the bedroom. What should we have the vet do for tests? We collected urine, stool and will have full panel of blood work done. I'm sure there is nothing that says "oh yeah it must be this" but any advice would be wonderful. Thanks, Gil Edited April 30, 2011 by izzysbuddy
4My2Greys
Sorry, no advice here. I hope the vets can figure out what is going on with him and that it's easily treated.

Guest izzysbuddy
Hopefully so. He still has a ravenous appetite, stools are fine etc.
EllenEveBaz
Good that he's eating and pooping nicely. I don't have much knowledge, but I try to keep up with tick diseases because we live in Tick Country USA. Even with a negative snap test, if the complete blood work shows anything a little wonky, some people try an IFA (titer test for antibodies). The snap test doesn't cover all the possibilities. I think doxy works on all tick diseases except babesiosis. What is his doxy dosage? If he is having pain and the deramaxx doesn't seem to be helping, you might try another NSAID. It's common for one to work better than others in an individual dog. But of course you have to be careful of possible negative reactions to the NSAID, too. Hugs to Izzy. JJNg
I'm assuming the vet did a thorough physical exam and wasn't able to find any sources of pain? With the whining, panting, and now loss of coordination, I'm wondering about a spinal cord/disc issue causing neck or back pain, or some other neurologic problem? I'd definitely explore tick-borne diseases further but also do a full neurologic assessment. Guest izzysbuddy
We ended up at Tufts Saturday morning...things took a major turn for the worst. By the time we got admitted at Tufts Izzy shut down neurologically. They had a neurologist do an evaluation and they determined that Izzy has a disease that crossed the "blood brain barrier" and has caused lesions on his frontal lobe. They said we could admit him and there was a very remote chance that he would survive, although he might relapse. After seeing him lose his vision and the ability to walk as well as seeing him suffer and seizure off and on for the entire car ride we made an extremely difficult choice and helped him across the bridge. He was the quirkiest hound anyone could ask for. Party time with the kong wubba:

Guest izzysbuddy
Thank you for all of your kind replies. If anything can be taken away from this for us and any other pet owners out there it's if your pet doesn't improve within 24hrs take them to a hospital that has a team of dr's who can evaluate the animal in a comprehensive manner. I know Izzy is resting peacefully, and I know we gave him the best life possible. He lived like a king in our house. He was a very unique dog. He learned tricks so fast, sit, shake, shake with the other hand, paw your dish for more water etc. When I think back, he started to forget some of his tricks a couple of weeks ago. I wonder if this all started then? Thank you again for all of your comforting replies.
