Guest 3furkids
Yesterday my 10 year old was having trouble standing. To my knowledge he has had no trama and we are home with him everyday. I took him to the vet and she thought either a stroke or ruptured disk. I immediately went to a specialist for a myelogram. It was done this morning showing a ruptured disk in the neck. The Dr. is doing surgery on that disk and preventative surgery on a few more. He will be in the clinic for 10-14 days. In reading up on the internet Greyhounds were never mentioned as dogs to watch. My biggest concern is what to expect when he comes home and if anyone elses Grey went through this and what I can expect. He is an oops puppy I have had since 8 weeks and has never been in a crate. I do know he will be when returns home but for how long? The clinic is 2 hours away and I don't have a problem driving there every other day but is it harded on him to see us or will it boost his spirits? Any input will be appreciated and thank you in advance.

Hubcitypam
I lost my Rex at 6 due to an inoperable ruptured disc in his neck so it does happen to greys. I also lost my first yorkie to disc disease -- I'll never forget sitting in that specialist's waiting room and being the only non doxie people there. Big hugs to you and your boy. Guest 3furkids
I just came back from the animal hospital visiting Casey after his surgery Friday. It was so sad, he is in so much pain. The staff said he was highly medicated and sedated but he just cried and moaned. It broke my heart. He was in a contorted position but they said if they tried to move him he screamed. I tried and couldn't either. I can't stand seeing him in so much pain. There was no medical staff there to ask questions but I am going back tomorrow. They only allowd me to see him for 15 minutes. I took him lots of goodies from home even his Daddy's dirty t-shirt and his brother teddy bear. I'm not even sure he knew I was there. I keep asking my self "Will it get better"? "Was it worth it"? Everything on the internet is about small dogs. Anyone know what I can expect? Can I ask the Dr to put him out to avoid his pain like an induced coma?? I am at such a loss and hurt so bad for him. DesiRayMom
I remember summer of 2008, I had both knees replaced. Had so many meds for pain it was ridiculous, but still hurt so bad I felt like begging someone to just shoot me & put me out of my misery. 3 months later, I was mowing the grass & wondering why I'd waited so long to get it done. I'm so sorry for what you're going through. Nothing worse than watching one of your furkids hurt so badly & there is nothing you can do for them. Sending prayers your way. Guest eaglflyt
Prayers going up for you and your hound. You might contact *Annie* above. There was a very long thread about Canyon's surgery and his recovery. I seem to remember that he had a lot of pain post op, but it did resolve with time and he made a full recovery. I hope your pup recovers quickly and is back to his normal self soon.

Guest Mollysmom10
Praying for a speedy recovery for Casey. Molly had knee surgery after I first got her six years ago and we nursed her back to health - but the first few days were tough. She then broke her neck three years ago, luckily the break wasn't near her spinal cord, but she was in a lot of pain. We had to keep her still for 6 weeks and highly sedated. I remember that time so clearly, it was tough - I kept thinking, how do you keep a greyhound from not running? She did slowly recover, stopped wimpering whenever she moved or tried to put her head down...it was tough, I feel for you, it is so hard to see them in pain. Don't second guess yourself, you were helping out your baby. Hang in there. Hoping for the best.
tbhounds
May want to ask the vet to put him on a CRI (constant rate infusion)drip. Dr Couto likes the cocktail of Fentanyl, lidocaine and Ketamine. Should take care of the pain, poor baby

Guest Annie
Yes, we had a very difficult time with Canyon post op. We also wondered if we had done the right thing but about 2 months down the road he started to turn the corner and never looked back. If you want to contact me privately, my email address is: annie swift @ shaw .ca (no spaces).
Guest 3furkids
Casey's therapist said the Dr did an x-ray yesterday and everything looks good. They have changed him to a pain patch which last for 3 days. She said his moaning and crying was partially due to the pain meds, disorientation of him not understanding what is going on and not understaning why he can't get up to potty. I don't know. I forgot to ask her if he is progressing normally with this or not. We will talk to the therapist after lunch today and she will decide if it's wise to vist him this soon again or not. I don't want to frustrate my little guy but I don't want him to think he has been abandoned there. Thanks for everyone thoughts and prayers. As always this is a great source of support and help. Guest 3furkids
My poor little pupper just can't get a break. There was an 'accident' at the hospital sometime over the wk-end and Casey's hip is out of it's socket. The Dr has tried putting it back in but now will required surgery again today. The Dr called Tues night to let us know. The myleograhp showed the bone in the socket prior to his disk surgery so they know it happened there and not before we brought him in. The Dr said there would be no charge for this surgery but that not my biggest concern. It's if he is up for another surgery this soon and how it will affect his recovery from the neck surgery. Poor guy was so sad last night. He drank some water for us but wouldn't eat a ground up steak I brought for him. He was a lot more alert last night then when I saw him Sunday but that wouldn't take much. Please send good thoughts and prayers as he heads for surgery again this afternoon. racindog
Canyon had the surgery a year and a half ago. He is 100% again! All the best to you both! You will have to keep him away from your other hound for a few weeks. He will need to be kept quiet and out of harms way. I've been wondering how Canyon was doing! Glad he's 100%-give him a kiss for me! I would need a good explanation as to how such a traumatic accident requiring a significant amount of force could happen in their hospital to a patient with spine surgery/restricted activity. I should hope there would be no charge! I would be infuriated-no telling what I would do. But the important thing is to help dear Casey. I will be praying for his quick recovery!!!!!! Guest 3furkids
No one is talking. Happened on a wk-end. They 'say' it probably happened by him trying to get up. I have a problem with the Dr knowing on Monday and not telling us until Tuesday night. We have to be careful as Casey is in their care right now and can't be relocated. It most important for him to get better and get home!!!
