Roscoe Isnt Feeling Well

Recommended Posts

Roscoe got up at 6 this morning (unheard of) and pooped on the livingroom carpet (also unheard of, he's NEVER had an accident). He wouldn't eat breakfast (unheard of!) and went to the door needing to go out. We went out and he had explosive diarrhea. Otherwise he seemed fine so I figured he may have eaten something he shouldn't have on one of our walks yesterday (he likes to sneak nasty stuff like chicken bones, or god knows what). I brought him out before I left for work, more diarrhea. I had to go in to work, but came home 1.5 hours later. Brought him outside, more diarrhea. I went back to work. 2 hours later went home, but Roscoe couldn't hold it. He 'exploded' in the living room. I called out of work for the rest of the day. His last potty was the accident at about 2:00. I've given him an Immodium, and bought some Gatorade for him to drink. He won't drink it, or anything else. He's been sleeping all afternoon, I can tell he's off. I just checked his gums and they're pale. Not white, they're still light pink, but I can tell they're lighter than normal.

Thoughts? I figured I'd make him a rice/chicken dinner, get him to drink, water gatorade, broth, whatever.. and just let it run its course?

To be honest, if he won't drink and has had that much big D, I'd have to take him in to the vets. The fact that his gums are not a great colour doesn't sound as good as it could so I'd really consider at least phoning the vets for advice at this point.

I hope he is much better soon :)

Lisa,

I'm sorry to hear Roscoe isn't feeling well. If he's still not drinking anything and his gums are still pale I'd give a call to your vet's just to be on the safe side. They may want to see him tomorrow if he's still not eating or drinking anything.

Let me know if there's anything I can do to help.

If it was me I would keep doing what you are doing for tonight but if he is in the same shape in the morning I would skip work and take him to a vet.

With that much big D and pale gums, I'd have him at the vet pronto. He's probably dehydrating because he's not drinking. They can go down hill very quickly once they start to get dehydrated.

If it was just the not-eating and diarrhea I could see waiting, but pale gums could be anemia, low blood pressure -- a variety of nasty things. Even if it's dehydration he may not eat or drink while he's dehydrated and could need fluids.

Personally, I'd be planning a vet visit -- tomorrow morning at the latest. :unsure

...ok. He ate about a cup and a quarter of 'slop'.

At least the slop got some fluids in him. My angel Jack got the explosive sort every so often...and lost appetite. But I agree with all the others, if he doesn't hold this slop in, then you need to be real careful of dehydration. Lots of prayers for Roscoe!!

If I wasn't at the vet tonight, I'd be going tomorrow if he's not back on and his gums are still pale. If they get really pale, I'd go tonight.

Glad he ate the "slop" Lisa......I know Sage had a battle with hooks. Its possible Roscoe may have picked them up too. Hope you have a good evening and things settle down.

Hoping things are quiet at your house tonight and that the gums don't get any paler. If I have the funds, I usually figure even a vi$it to the e-vet better than a worried, sleepless night.

Our primary vet before we moved suggested letting the dog fast for 24 hours, and just offering fluids, to help the gut quiet down. I usually caved before the 24 hours, but I do keep low sodium broth in the pantry to offer as a fluid.

Some dogs tolerate peeled potatoes or pasta better than rice.

Lisa, really if his diarrhea is that bad I wouldn't give him food tonight at all. He may need some Metronidozole or Tylosin; the sooner the better.

So many different suggestions! :lol

Initially he ate a cup+ of slop, and left the rest. I brought him outside so he could potty, and he seemed to be ok so we stayed out for a bit (it was beautiful weather today) and putzed around in the grass. He did not poop. I'll take that as a good sign. We came inside and he finished the rest of the slop (2/3 cup) and drank a little gatorade..... and then a whole bunch of water! *yay* I took a look at his gums and they're back to normal.

Now had I waited an hour, I wouldn't have felt the need to start a thread. :lol

Maybe so, but we all know that sick feeling in our stomach when our houndies aren't right - and no matter how calm we are in the rest of our lives - panic sets in with the babies! blush.gif In fact, I bet your stomach felt worse than his!!!

It's 12:52 AM and waaaay past my bedtime. Maybe dinner was a bad idea, because now we're going through round 2. He went 3 times in the last hour or so, once was in my bedroom because I didn't read his very subtle signs. Needless to say I had to toss a favorite pair of shoes.

His gums still look good right now. He's finally settled in to bed (for now...) but I'm wide awake because I'm waiting to have to jump up and go out again.

I'm rather tired.

2:30 here! Still awake.. we've been out several more times, and he also threw up all the slop he ate for dinner. I finally got him to drink a good amount of water just now and his gums are still his normal pink color. I've called the vet.. not a lot of help there. She said it's really up to me whether I want to bring him in now, or see how he's doing in the morning. My checking account has advised me to stay up all night and watch him rather than spending money I don't have for what I hope is a stomach bug.

Fingers crossed for improvement by morning.

I usually give one Immodium like you did. If the diarrhea continues I figure giving too much Immodium would either mask what's really going on or otherwise screw up the intestinal flora.

Is there a way to restrict him to one area of your apartment in case he has to go while you're gone to work? Could you just give him broth for a day rather than any solid food and see if this settles down?

I'd take him in this morning. It could be HGE you're dealing with. If you see any blood in his stool, get him in right away.

Yikes, just checking in. Also, didn't you just start him on thyroid meds a couple of days ago? I'd think about stopping those in case he's having some kind of reaction to the hormone or the fillers -- not that likely, but I'd want to eliminate it as a variable.
