Guest Fasave
A couple of days ago, my senior came home from a walk with blood in his mouth. I had no idea how this happened but assumed he bit his tongue or lip during the walk. Then, as I walked around the house, I found bloody drool stains on a variety of beds, carpets and blankets. He was licking things too so I assumed he just kept opening the wound. I have noticed a slight "off" odor from his mouth but he's got awesome teeth for a ten year old so I just attributed it to old age. Then this morning I noticed this lump on the roof of his mouth. Sorry the picture quality is bad but he wasn't too please with me shoving a camera in his mouth. Anyone seen anything like this before? Guest dobiegrey
Betty has one exactly like that right behind her two front teeth and my vet has said it is nothing to worry about that it has probably been there since she was born and that is part of her overbite. Guest Fasave
Has Betty's ever bled? I've had Ave for 7 years and never noticed it but it's not an area you can easily see. It does look like it almost has a "head" like a pimple.
CaliforniaGreys
Shortly after Lenny arrived and I was checking his teeth, I saw this Vet said nothing to worry about and he took care of it when he did Lenny's dental. There's a name for it but for the life of me, I can't remember what it is Quote Missing my little Misty who took a huge piece of my heart with her on 5/2/09, and Ekko, on 6/28/12 For the sick, the lost, and the homeless
Guest dobiegrey
No, Betty's has never bled. Hers just looks like it is part of the roof of her mouth, not a pimple, so maybe it is not like his. Hers is the exact same color as the roof of her mouth.
JohnF
It is most likely an 'Epulis'. One of my dogs had it and it didn't cause any problems. http://www.peteducation.com/article.cfm?c=2+1631&aid=3057 Edited June 18, 2010 by JohnF
Guest Fasave
Sigh. If this is it, it says treatment is surgery. I guess we need to see a vet.

Guest Fasave
Just back from the vets and they are pretty concerned. He is going to see a dentist at Angell Animal Hospital in Boston on Tuesday at noon. I am to bring him unfed so they can do any necessary procedures but will likely be able to come home that night. Trying hard to remain positive but he's had two other cancerous tumors removed from his body within the last two years. The poor guy. Sambuca
Please bring him to the vet. I went to a friends house and I said something about her hound Fortune looking a bit thinner. She was going to ask my opinion about it. We decided it couldn't hurt to treat her for worms, so my friend went to pill her and Fortune yelped. Her mom tried 1 more time and got another yelp, so she asked me to take a look since Fortune was a little wary of her mom. I very carefully lifted her lips and her teeth were in pretty bad shape and her mouth was bleeding a bit. My friend brought Fortune to the vet the next day and they found a large tumor in her mouth. It was so large she had trouble opening her mouth and eating well. She died a month or so later. Please get this looked at while it's small. Guest bigorangedog
Apollo had one of these in January, and the vet insisted that we have it taken off. She said it was most likely an epulis, but the kinds of cancers you find in the mouth tend to be pretty nasty. So she wanted to biopsy it. Fortunately for us it turned out to be just an epulis. (Of course, 2 weeks later he was Dx with osteo....)

greypuppyluv
Yes, it could be an epulis, but there are different kinds....some non cancerous. Tinsel had an ossifying epulis in the back of her mouth that was only found when she went under for a dental and Zuma just last week had an epulis removed that was covering one of her teeth. Both were non cancerous. Good luck with your senior boy and let us know what the vet finds. Guest Fasave
Thanks for the encouraging words. I was quite shocked at how concern she was but glad that we were able to move to a specialist quickly. I asked about an epulis and she said it was possible but really a biopsy is the only way to know. I lost this guys littermate in September and I can't imagine having to let another go so soon after. Boy do these guys take a chunk of your heart.

kudzu
My guy had one that was removed during an otherwise routine dental. Because the tumor was attached to a ligament that held a tooth in he lost the corresponding tooth. Biopsy came back benign & has had no other probs. We just found a similar lump in my parent's dog, non-GH. She had her dental, lump removed, biopsy benign. Yep, it needs to come out & have the biopsy but don't start worrying. Easy to say, huh?
