An update: Wilbur has made it through surgery and sedation and is resting. I haven't spoken with our vet yet, so I don't have any details. But I am soooo happy he made it this far!

I should mention that Wilbur has developed arthritis in his hip in the last couple months, and it is the same leg that he broke.

Such beautiful pups. I'm so sorry about your loss of Macey. Sending hugs for you and healing white light for Wilbur. I'm glad to hear that he came through the surgery well. I hope that his recovery goes as well.

So sorry to hear of such an awful day. Macey was a sweetheart; love her photo. Hoping Wilbur gets well soon! Black hounds are my heart throb!

I have a strange & wonderful update. Visited Wilbur at the vet & spoke with the doctor. It was a bad break right up near the hip, but it's pinned together. The vet said he was concerned that his bone snapped so easily, and we mentioned the arthritis in his hip. The vet said no, there is no arthritis in either of Wilbur's hips or his knee; he said his joints look wonderful. He showed us the xrays, and, while the break looks ugly, the joints are GORGEOUS!

Wilbur's arthritis diagnosis came without xrays because he is next to impossible to xray without sedation, and it came from the other vet in the practice after a very thorough exam. He's been on Deramaxx for the last couple weeks, and it's done very well for him. After speaking with the vet some more and putting pieces together, he concluded that it is very likely that Wilbur was hobbling around not from arthritis but from a crack in the bone of his leg that snapped last night when he fell.

I think this is wonderful news. My 12 year old baby is healthy as can be and should heal fantastically from this injury. He will probably come home tomorrow, and I can't wait. He heard my voice down the hall and tried to get up; he was very happy to see his family. His leg is shaved from hip to ankle, but he didn't look too embarrassed about it.

Thank you for all the good wishes. I'll get photos of him tomorrow when he is home.

I am sorry for your loss. What a horrible couple of days you had. Many hugs your way.

When they x-rayedthe leg when Wilbur was "under" were they able to determine why the leg broke so easily?

Hoping it's nothing serious and he heals quickly and uneventfully.

The xrays look good, and my vet didn't mention OS, but I'll discuss it with him tomorrow when I visit Wilbur and (hopefully) bring him home. He did bring up the subject of the bone breaking easily, so it is something he's aware of. I'll discuss that with him further too.

I was so overjoyed that he found no arthritis that I didn't consider other things. He has responded very well to Deramaxx since he was put on it a couple weeks ago.

Please have a specialist read the xrays. A lot of times OS gets misdiagnosed as something like arthritis at first. I found out my Morgan has OS when his leg broke.

Have your vet overnight the x-rays to Dr. Couto. If you need the info where to send, anyone of a number of people can help you, including myself.

Just to be 110% sure OS is not lingering there and to have peace of mind.
