Guest mhall
Three years ago we brought home Tarmac – an 82 lb. ball of nerves who was afraid of stairs, garbage trucks, automatic doors, rain, the stray cat in our backyard and pretty much everything else in our apartment and city neighborhood. Over time, he blossomed into a confident, happy go lucky people-loving hound who enriched our lives in so many ways. There were some bumps along the way, but I can’t imagine a better introduction into dog ownership and the joy of sharing our lives with a greyhound. Before we brought him in for his appointment yesterday, we spent an hour at his favorite woods taking in the scenery. He wasn’t up for getting out of the car, but did stand up and do some sniffing and looking around. I snapped a few pictures. Sniffing out the window The view from the back of the car Tarmac and Will An attempt to get a photo of Tarmac and me Begging for cheese (note the drool) Taking a rest Sticking close to me on the way to the vet. I rode in back with him, just like I did when we first brought him home. He passed away in the back of our car, one of his favorite places. He’s always loved going for car rides. The end was rough – the past couple of days he hasn’t let anyone other than Will or I touch him, and he panicked as soon as he saw the vet. He struggled mightily, but fortunately gave in and stood still for the injection once he realized no one was going to mess with his leg. I feel very conflicted about it. Part of me, the more rational part, feels a huge sense of relief that he is no longer in pain. Another part of me feels terribly guilty that he had to experience fear during his last few minutes with us. I keep trying to remind myself that it was just a brief messy end to what was a very happy life. It is so quiet at home without him, and there is so much to miss. His little bat head will no longer be staring out at me from the back window when I come up the driveway. There will be no more games of fetch in the big fenced field, no more opportunities to see the look of sheer joy on his face when he runs. He will no longer be hovering by the counter when I chop veggies for dinner, staring at the growing pile and silently urging it to fall to the floor. We won’t hear the staccato of his nails on the side of our bed at night while he dreams. I won’t discover toys he stashed in my tote bag when I get to work in the morning. I will have to take my weekend walks in the woods and afternoon naps alone. I will miss the enthusiasm with which he greeted each day, and his ability to get me up in the morning with a smile on my face, even in the dark of winter. It’s much harder to get out of bed when I don’t wake up to him poking my arm with his wet nose. I hope Will and I can get used to the silence. For a quiet creature, he sure added a lot of happy noise to our lives. Farewell my sweet Tarmac. You were so loved, and you will always, always be missed.
