sweetdogs
p.s. I was able to jump real quick and add this P.S., but haven't been successful at figuring out how to "update" my posts with an edit function longer after the fact. If anyone has advice on that-- that's appreciated, too. I think you need to be a Greytalk supporter to be able to edit anytime. Guest lynne893
Thanks, everyone, just made a donation and hopefully will be able to edit soon. Just laying by Timber, waiting for vet to call back. But I think I know now, and I think DH does, too. Timber told me with her eyes this morning. Later, she had some chicken out of my hand-- very happy to have that. Now resting quietly after a long night. Will update later. Hugs to all of you. Thank you. Guest hlpnhounds
One of the greatest gifts we can give to our dear friends is to let them go peacefully and painlessly over the bridge knowing you are there with them to guide them along. crazygang
First Second, talk to your vet so you know what you're dealing with. Maybe it's the meds, maybe it's a bug, maybe it's her time but you need that information to go forward. Third, having to make that decision, that phone call, that ride is always so hard. But we never want our dear friends to suffer & that's where we get our strength from. We're all thinking of you & Timber. My thoughts and prayers are with the 3 of you as you make this very emotional journey. Guest lynne893
Just another quick update: Her past primary vet called back after I left a message to see if he was available to come to our home to help us this evening. We were told by the vet we prefer at the clinic that he is the one that will perform that service, since he lives in the area. (Unfortunately, he would be our third choice- he's not real compassionate.) He said he thought we might be doing this "prematurely." (Even though he personally hasn't seen Timber in months!) He asked if she was still taking food (chicken, yes) and said to put her on carafate (we did, she still had bloody stool and vomited). He said he would give her another couple of days and if we still feel like we need to, call the clinic, bring her in and they'd "schedule us in so we don't have to wait." I explained, again, that we want to avoid that at all costs because it would be traumatic for her (not for us-- honest.). He said he couldn't do it this week! We live in his general neighborhood and the neighborhood of the clinic, for heaven's sake! I know I shouldn't be annoyed at that, he has his personal commitments, but show some compassion, right? So now, we're waiting for a referral guy to call back about scheduling a time to let her go at home, and also for her specialty vet to call back just to generally give an update on Timber's status and see what the specialty vet thinks (I called at 8am). Los Angeles is so frustrating. I don't remember my community in Wisconsin having sub-par customer service like this. I've lived here 8 years now, and this has always been my biggest annoyance. The old primary vet's remarks about "premature" with our decision tore my heart. That is why I am so grateful for the support of the community here at Greytalk. AngelWhispers
I haven't had much time to be supportive to anyone lately, but I saw the title and popped in. Follow your heart with regards to Timber, you know her better than any vet or specialist. She'll let you know and if you feel in your heart it's time...then it's time. Hugs to you, dh and Timber. grey14me
I am so sorry the vet is not cooperating I understand how important it is for this to be done at home. There is a service that is listed in the GPA-OC/LA chapter that has an ambulance service come to the home for this. It might be worth looking in to. I'm not sure what part of L.A. you're in, but here is a link that may help you. clicky Edited September 14, 2009 by grey14me Michelle...forever missing her girls, Holly 5/22/99-9/13/10 and Bailey 8/1/93-7/11/05 Religion is the smile on a dog...Edie Brickell Wag more, bark less :-)
Guest TheUnrulyHound
Don't let his comments hurt you like that. He has not seen Timber so how on earth could he know?!?!? I hope you can speak to her current vet so that perhaps he can give you some real answers if there is anything else to do. I am assuming that the specialty vet has seen her recently? greyhndz
I'm thinking about you and Timber and DH, and hoping you were able to find someone who is willing to respect your wishes, and (I'm still reeling from hearing this) not question them, when you're the one looking into Timber's eyes. Have faith in yourselves for loving and knowing Timber like no one else can, and please don't let his inappropriate comments cause you to have doubts. Finding a mobile vet service of some kind is a great idea, as grey14me suggested. Hopefully you'll be able to find someone who can come quickly. Another option (only if you're not able to get a vet to come to your home) would be asking the vet to come out to your car to send Timber on her journey. I did this once for one of my osteo girls. I sedated her with pain meds and benadryl before leaving. My vet came out to the car, I was in the back with her holding her head, gentle classical music was playing, and she journeyed peacefully. Maybe your vet (or any vet with a heart) would be willing to do this. You're such a wonderful mama.
DeputysMom
I feel for you and your DH, and for Timber. We have had to let three of our greys go to the bridge....it is a gut wrenching choice. I truly believe they will let you know..as you have already said Timber has let you know. Having said that, I would search high and low for a place that would come to your home. We did not have that option, and I think it stressed the dogs out even more. You are a greyt momma to Timber. Peace and love to you, your DH and Timber.
