bjnno1
Black Jack has an area on his face, right under his eye that swells up every once in awhile. A few weeks ago it started swelling up (it's been awhile since it's done this) and I held a warm wash rag against his face a couple of times a day for a few days and it went down. (That's what I did last time it appeared) but it's come back again (this is the most swollen (biggest) it's ever been) so I guess it's time to call the vet In your experiences, is this an absessed tooth? What will they do for it? Thoughts? Anything I can do to make him feel better? He isn't acting like he's in any pain, but I know it has to be hurting the poor little guy Here are some pictures... Guest RocketDog
Could it possibly be a blocked tear duct or gland or something? It sure does look painful, poor Black Jack
Guest greyhoundis
I have a girl - Blitzen Millie that has an abcessed tooth that looks ot be in about the same spot - wish I were good with a camera. She had 2 several month ago - one on each side. We gave her antis and scheduled a dental. Her heart stopped on the table and they did not have time to remove the other tooth. She then bled out that night so at age 14 we have opted to never do surgery again. I give her antibiotics for 1 week every 3 or 4 weeks. But form pictures they look in the same place. When the tooth gets really infected - week before I start antis - it swells all under her eyes and across the bridge - Does any of this make sense. Good luck with Black Jack - it is strange what the teeth can do to us and them!
bjnno1
I almost thought that it looked a little high for a tooth.....how about some buffered asprin? That might help with the swelling too. I'm not sure, but it's in the same spot it was in last time and my vet said he needed to have his teeth cleaned. His teeth aren't really that bad, but on that side, they aren't really great either. I don't want to do a dental because Black Jack is 10 years old, but I also don't want him to be in pain either. Like I said, he doesn't act like he's in pain, but it HAS to be painful UGH!!! I gave him some buffered aspirin a couple of weeks ago when it was swollen, but don't want to give him anything w/o the vet's approval, just incase they have to pull a tooth or something. I'm going to call them in the morning and try to get him in this week, but just wanted some advice from you guys to see if you thought that's what it was also. Exactly why I don't want him to have a dental Last time (a few months ago last time...) he gave him antibiotics and I did the warm wash rag thing and it hasn't come back until a couple of weeks ago. That's when I gave him a buffered aspirin and did the warm wash rag compresses for a few days and it went down, but yesterday it started swelling up again, and well... you can see where it is today Quote Major & Black Jack are the BEST Doggies in the WORLD A Major Presence - MAJOR - March 10, 1999 - January 13, 2011 Little Joe - BLACK JACK - July 31, 1998 - February 8, 2011 "If you lead your life the right way, the karma will take care of itself. CaliforniaGreys
I always worry when they need to be put under, but 10 is really not that old and if all his blood work looks good, he should do fine. Naturally you'll worry, but if it is a tooth, that has to be painful for him. Whatever it is, when there's swelling, it hurts! I've got him tucked in my prayers and please, keep us posted. Anne
When Phantom had his bad tooth removed, the vet said the roots were into the peri-orbital space because when she squirted the socket to clean it out, his eye was wiggling. So yeah, it's possible that his infected roots could be up that high. Hope it goes away quickly.
Guest KyGrey
Beej, 10 is not old at all. Would it be possible that a local could be used kind of like novacaine for us (humans)? Black Jack is in good health and all that so even if they do have to put him under I know it's hard not to but I wouldn't worry as much as I would if Lee (at 13) had to be put under for any reason now. Let me know if there's anything I can do. I'm just across town.

bjnno1
Yep, it's GOT to be an infected tooth I was getting ready to do a warm compression and decided to swab the back of his teeth with a q-tip, it was bloody so before I put the warm compression on, I put a couple of steryl cotton balls under his gums and in the back of this mouth (he wasn't happy) but I put the warm compression on and guess what???? The bump went down (still there but MUCH smaller) and the cotton balls were filled with bloody/yellowish/fluid that stunk. Poor monster I guess the big lump was a pocket of fluid (the bloody yellowish stuff) I hope I got most of it on the cotton ball and he didn't swallow any of it Yep... will be calling the vet first thing in the a.m. Quote Major & Black Jack are the BEST Doggies in the WORLD A Major Presence - MAJOR - March 10, 1999 - January 13, 2011 Little Joe - BLACK JACK - July 31, 1998 - February 8, 2011 "If you lead your life the right way, the karma will take care of itself. bjnno1
I have the most AWESOME vet in the world and the crummiest cell phone service My vet got my e-mail last night and actually called me but thanks to my stupid cell phone, it dropped the call and didn't know that he left a voice mail until this morning. Anyhoo... the vet thinks that's probably an absessed tooth and they generally aren't painful. NO ASPIRIN!!!!!!!! so we gotta wait a couple weeks before he can do the dental. Called this morning and made an appointment for January 15th. Got home from work tonight and the bump was all scabby so I got a clean warm wash rag and gently patted it and it was blood. I cleaned it off pretty good and looks like it might have split open So gonna call vet back in the morning and see if maybe he should be on anti-biotics so it doesn't get infected before our appointment. Again, he's acting totally normal. Dad came over and said he and Major played in the back yard for about 20 minutes. Dad was all excited because he's never seen Maj play before Maj usually just lays in the blue recliner when Dad see's him. Anybody have any experience with one of these busting before???
