Today was a very hard day. I had to take my senior, Miss Courtney Lynn to have her put down. At 15, she has lived a very full and long life, and it was time. She let me know in her own way, and I love her enough to really listen. She went in style. She was my little Red Hat lady, and loved to go places. especailly if lunch or shopping was involved. So she requested to be able to wear her red hat and her putple boa when she went to see the Dr one last time.

We were fortunate enough that the Dr fully understood how terribly hard this was going to be, so he came out to the car to help her cross instead of her having to be in the cold and sterile clinic setting. It might not made a difference to some, but it did to Courtney.

After she was gone, we took her to a friend's home, out in the boonies. She also loved Courtney, but because she has a cat rescue, she doesn't feel that she can have a greyhound of her own (although Courtney would visit every chance she got, and never once chased a cat). We laid her to rest in the little pet cemetary she has on her property, in the shade of a huge live oak. Courtney is happy and content there, and has good company all around her.

Not that Courtney is really gone - she's still with us in so many ways, just no longer physically. She has joined her old friend and sister, Lucinda, who died in 2005, inside my head - they are both constantly talking to me, and helping me with the real legacy they have left behind - our adoption group. If there had not been a Courtney, there would not have been an adoption group, and a good many more houndies would have had a more difficult time finding their way to the couch. She was also directly responsible for us also taking in Lucinda as she was not happy being home alone while Steve and I were at work. The home demolition ended when Lucinda came to join her.

So she is at the Bridge, having a blast chasing bunnies and squirrels, and bossing everyone around. She has met up sith her old friends from the farm and track, and all her internet buddies she made thru all the lists momma is on who have gone ahead. The only thing she says is missing at the Bridge is the Shopping. I figure that she will soon have THAT rectified as well.
