Celebrating A Year's Survival With Osteo

Recommended Posts

Merlin (SummerWind British Flyer) came "across the pond" from the UK at 9 months of age. He's littermate to my heart-dog, Amy (at the bridge). He lived with me for awhile, because he needed a little "boot camp" training to learn some house manners. He is well-loved by friends in Atlanta, who also have two of Amy's puppies.

Merlin is 11 years old.

A year ago, he was diagnosed with osteo. His owners chose not to do amputation or chemo. But, he was given Metacam/Meloxicam as part of his pain management. We've since learned this medication has been shown to slow the progression of some forms of osteo. Apparently, that is what happened with our sweet MerlMo!

The meloxicam has started to cause tummy upsets, so he has been changed to other meds and the osteo is progressing now. But, still, a YEAR of good life with osteo!!! That's sorta amazing...

Here's a pic of Merlin, with his look-alike nephew, Colonel, about 5 years ago...

But now the disease is starting again :( How sad What will they do now?

Merlin is still doing well, though the disease is obviously progressing.

They have chosen not to go down the road of amputation/chemo and are enjoying what time they have left.

He is beautiful.

Greyhound angels at the bridge- Casey, Charlie, Maggie, Molly, Renie, Lucy & Teddy. Beagle angels Peanut and Charlie. And to all the 4 legged Bridge souls who have touched my heart, thank you. When a greyhound looks into you eyes it seems they touch your very soul.

Wow... that is amazing! I've heard that there's an aggressive form of osteo, and a much less aggressive form. Hope that handsome boy has continued good days and quality of life with his family. :hope

May handsome Merlin continue enjoying himself!

Thank heavens for Metacam/meloxicam/Mobic. Meloxicam is very underused/underrated. It's been miraculous in our house too. It saved our cat from a toe amputation -- the toe is no longer inflamed and swollen and has helped her sore back big time. It's also made my life a whole lot better when other NSAIDS weren't working for my joint and nerve pain.

Thanks, Merlin, for your great example and hang in there.

How wonderful that they have gotten that much quality time with Merlin. Is Meloxicam the same as Piroxicam? That is what our vet suggested for Winnie, and said it had some cancer fighting properties. That is what she got for pain, and the artemisinin for the cancer---3 years remission.
