:cry1 She's taking the news much better than I am :weep:

She's going to the opthamologist on Wed for another exam but our vet is confident in the diagnosis.

This sucks.

eta: she'll be 7 in September.

That is upsetting news. I'm no expert, but many years ago I had a poodle with PRA (and cataracts). If my memory serves me correctly, he went blind very slowly, adapted very well and was very happy until he was euthanased for something else at almost 15.

Oh man. Morky was just diagnosed a few months ago, and I started a thread on it. I got a lot of good advice and information, and found out Jenn8's Onyx also has PRA. I'll try to find the thread and add it to this post, so you can see some of the comments. They were all very helpful and encouraging. I did end up buying the book that was recommended - Living with Blind Dogs, and it's very very informative in terms of how to not only deal with the diagnosed dog, but the rest of the dogs in the house.

I know how you feel, I started crying when the ophthalmologist told me (he was in there for a scratch on his cornea, we didn't expect this news at all), and Ryan and I certainly took it much worse than the Mork man!

I know it really stinks to get this news, and I'm sorry :( But Hanna will be ok.

ETA the thread I had on Mork's diagnosis. Mork is 8, and it's moderately advanced according to our doc. His night vision is pretty poor, as is his peripheral vision. But he can still track a squirrel on our walks like nobody's business!

Thanks...I read through your thread when we got home from the vet. Lots of good advice in there. I guess it's always harder on the humans. Our vet has gotten us through a lot of good and bad times but I think he was a little taken aback by my reaction. I was prepared to hear it, but couldn't help crying. Hanna Banana is one of my original two-pack...my secodn girl. I call her my little sunshine b/c she got me through a lot of tough times. I just want everything in her life to be perfect. I guess we all want the same things for our greybabies.

Thanks to everyone for your good thoughts. We'll do everything we can for Hanna and make her transition as easy as possible.

Mecki's boy Sully has it too. He's almost completely blind now, but is still a happy, healthy boy. He just takes a second to recognize me when I visit now. Because it's so gradual, I doubt they even notice it happening.

How did you know anything was wrong or was it picked up on a routine exam?

To be honest, I took her in b/c someone posted on an adoption groups site about their dog being diagnosed. Some things I'd seen in Hanna the last couple months were similar to what they saw. Hanna has always been a...unique little greyhound. She's got lots of weird quirks, so some of the stuff I saw I just kinda thought was her being her. Mostly I noticed her seemingly walking around things in the yard when there was nothing there. Not seeing things that she should have been able to see, i.e. handing out treats she'd be in line w/everyone else but she wouldn't take one you offered until you got it touching her nose. I thought she was being picky (which she can be). I looked at her eyes a few times but they looked normal to me and she went up and down stairs, in and out of crate, maneuvered around the house and other dogs with no problems. I mean, sometimes she knocked her head into things, but pretty much all of our dogs do that from time to time. So...I kinda chalked up everything up to her being quirky. I still had a nagging "something's off" feeling, but when I saw a pic posted on the other site taken indoors and the reflection of the flash off the eyes made me think of a pic I took of Hanna around Christmas that I just thought was a weird flash and picture angle. Nope...PRA dogs have more reflective eyes.

Sigh...I feel awful. I feel like I should have listened to my gut the first time I thought there was something off about her. It's only been a couple months so I'm not sure it even makes a difference, but I just feel awful :(

I'm hoping the opthamalogist will tell me that our vet is wrong, but I know that's probably not going to happen.

I know the diagnosis can be shocking but Hanna will adjust and be fine. My Rocky had it for years and did great unless we were some place new and I always made sure I walked him around with his leash on for guite awhile and really tuned into him.

My 11 1/2 year old Judd was diagnosed with PRA 1 1/2 years ago. The eye specialist he sees suggested Ocuvite PreserVision. It is an eye supplement by Bausch & Lomb. I get it at Walgreens. It will not prevent the progression, but has been show to slow it down in people. It has not been studied in dogs, so it is not proven whether it has the same effect. Judd gets one pill every morning and so far still has sight in one of his eyes. His condition is somewhat unique in that the eyes are not symmetrical. One eye is completely blind (I got an incorrect diagnosis initially so it was not followed up on properly), but the other seems to be progressing very slowly.

I'm sorry that you and Hannah are dealing with this news. There is something really heartbreaking about getting a chronic diagnosis for our beloved hounds. Be glad that its will be easier on miss Hannah than it is for you. :grouphug
