Guest lisa73
Jenny is one of the first Greyhounds that Gap homed and she went to live with my inlaws. On Friday a truck slammed on its air breaks spooked her and she took off. She was missing for three days in extreme heat and is nearly 7 and not an off leader so not particularly fit we managed to get to her just in time and a couple of hours later we I am sure would have found her dead. The minute we saw her and she had time to recognise me know she was safe she collapsed and a frantic 8 mile trip to the vets with the car windows and air con on ensued and washing her down with cool water. Once at the vets we worked alongside the vet for an hour giving cold towel treatment, fluid support and cold water enemas. Things got worse 24hrs later and the two things we hoped wouldnt happen happened she started with hyperacute exertional rhabdomyolisis which I had a horrid gut feeling she would but it just got worse and worse and this in turn turned into DIC (disseminated intravascular coagulation). Last night was particularly harrowing as the potassium levels in her blood wouldnt lower and the platelets were low but too much else was going on (swelling on the brain) aswell to risk a plasma infusion. Thankfully no short of a miracle today the potassium levels have dropped to near to normal, her liver enzymes are all over the place as to be expected BUT unbelievably her kidneys are totally fine no damage at all which was the main concern. She has odemas in her legs due to the DIC BUT even these look to be reducing. She seems to be turning into a determined little miracle dog and is even now eating chicken and cocktail sausages merrily. How all the searchers turned up at exactly the right point on Sunday to allow us to get her and how quickly we acted and with the right treatment getting her to the vets I am not ready to accept that Jen is ready to leave us yet! She is a little figher. So far positive thoughts have worked miracles and any more anyone has to spare would be more than greatfully appreciated x The vets are now really pleased and will update me more in the morning. I have to admit I was gobsmacked at how perky she was today when we visited. I know we are still *critical* but stable but we seem to be moving in the right direction and my vets are being fantastic allowing me to be fully involved in her primary care.
